"We have no other choice," Zavala said aloud. "Rasputin's bunker has been filled with gas. The Fallen's ether breathers keeps them alive. We can't get in."
"So?" Cayde-6 exclaimed. "She has a helmet. Who cares about some gas? We need that code!"
"Cayde, I think you forgot about the incident on phobos..."
"When we dealt with the echo?"
"The guardian barely survived." Zavala tested, "His helmet could not regulate that much gas. Rasputin has pumped more than three times that amount through the bunker."
"You think I forgot about phobos? Pfft, I was talking about somebody else."
"And who would that be, Cayde?" Ikora chimed in.
"An old friend" Cayde replied. "You might know her. Sasha?"
The vanguard gave him a puzzled look.
"Ugh, I'm talking about the Taikonaut."
Sasha moved through her old pod on the moon. Moved some items, balanced some pictures. Made it homey. She laughed a little at herself. The only way she knew this pod was hers was because pictures of it were in her helmet's files. She didn't even know if it was her pod or someone else's.
Ah yes, her helmet. The one she woke up in. Old, chinese. What the late colonies on the moon had always used. Golden age air regulation. Although not working at maximum capacity, it could still do what a regular guardian helmet could. She didn't like to depend on it, though.
Sasha had an air tank on her back that doubled as a booster aswell. She could jump higher than any other titan could. It had limited capacity, of course. She carried a satchel on her belt that carried re-purposed helium coils.
Sasha shoved the last panel in place, and sighed as she sat on the patched-up couch.
"Well, ghost;" she waved her hand around. "how does it look?"
"Guardian." The ghost replied.
"I told you, don't call me that. My name is Sasha."
"Guar- erm, Sasha. There are other things you could be doing with your time."
"Come on, ghost. There are a ton of other guardians out there. Besides. This is home. Now, how does it look?"
"The tower is your home-"
"Ghost."
"But-"
"Ghost, I told you, the moon is where I belong."
The lights flickered, turned on, and steadied.
"There we go!" Sasha exclaimed. "That means life support is on, too."
She carefully took off her helmet and looked at it. She began to wonder (again) who she was. From the messages and videos in her helmet, all evidence pointed to her being a university graduate, sent to the moon to help in the creation of an atmosphere. She looked out the window. Fat load of good I did.
She found out her name from an old message, presumably from her first flight. Again, she looked out the window. There, she saw the ship she found as she woke up in the pod.
Enough about that, she thought. I should go patrol.
Right as she grabbed her helmet, she got a transmission from Cayde.
"Y'ello?", Sasha said, bored.
"Sash! Good to hear you. How's your pod re-modeling going?" Cayde said.
"I actually just finished. How's vanguarding?"
"Boring as always..."
"Cayde, you never call to catch up. I know you. What do you want?"
"We have a situation with rasputin."
She flinched. Rasputin. The warmind who initiated Midnight Exigent. The one who erraticated most life on the moon. She knew from her helmet's cameras. A wave of bombs. Souls lost. Light taken.
Nevermind that now.
"What's going on?"
"His bunker is filled with fallen."
"So? Send in a fireteam."
"We... can't. He filled his bunker with poison gas."
"Oh. And you just call me and expect me to help, after what happened?"
"Sash-"
"Screw it. I'm in. Got nothing better to do."
Sasha landed in the cosmodrome. The howling wind curved around her helmet.
She pulled out her hand cannon. A gem she found in Taniks' stash. She called it Hawkmoon, from the claw on the bottom and the feather etchings on the barrel. She used it for everything. It was light, steady, and a dream to handle.
She transmat her sparrow from her ship.
"Thanks, ghost." She muttered.
She zoomed across the weathered landscape until she came across the bunker's upper levels. Already crawling with fallen.
She pulled out her knife and had at it.
After the fight, she holstered her weapon, filled her pack with atmosphere, and went down the stairs. The entrance was clear.
And open.
"Dumb fallen." Sasha said. "Can't even cover their tracks right."
She went deeper, until she found the catwalk. Too many fallen to count. They were bunched up, clawing, hissing, and hitting each other. She thought she saw some pushed off the ledge. Must have been having duels. She couldn't see over their heads, and didn't look long enough to see anything else.
She decided that she wasn't going to be able to fight them all. Using her jump jet, she flew to a ledge above the catwalk. It took little effort, and she got up with ease. The amount of ruckus the fallen were causing concealed her pack.
She shimmied along the edge. Below, she could see what was happening: as her theory suggested, an archon and a captain were fighting. She guessed, over who would be in charge of the pack.
The archon cut off the captian's head in one clean swipe.
The dregs in the front sulked, and went back into the crowd. They must have wanted change.
She made it to the other side without detection. As she jumped down, she fired her pack, and she landed gently, without a sound. Well, the pack was loud as hell, but the catwalk was still ever roaring. She stumbled on landing, and her ammo pack fell over the edge. She leaped for it, but it was to late. 13 bullets should be enough, eh?
She kept on.
The cooling chamber was brimming with arc energy. She didn't question what could be in there, and continued. Must be people. She thought, breaking her self-promise.
"Ghost?" Sasha whispered.
"Yes, guardian?"
Sasha flinched, but kept talking. "Is this gas flammable?"
"Very."
"So, no solar?"
"If you want us both to live, yes."
Sasha grunted.
She hated being in the bunker. It held what killed her in the first place. Her neighbour needed help loading a rover, and then she flew across 200 yards of land, into her pod. At least that's what the video told her.
She came across the room she was looking for. Triple encrypted, with 37-digit passcodes.
"Craaaaap." Sasha exhumed. "Ghost, can you open it?"
"It'll take a while, but I can do it. Maybe."
"Knowing you, I'll just do it."
Before she began, she refilled her pack with a backup coil. Last one on her, since she lost her pack. Not enough to make it back up. Sasha flipped her wristpad up. She knew how to code and hack, from reading golden age tutorials hidden away in her helmet.
She opened it in ten minutes.
"Easy-peasy." She celebrated.
"How did you do that?" Ghost questioned.
"Helmet."
"Oh. I could have done it, too!"
"In fifteen minutes?"
"No…"
She entered the mainframe room, pulled out a data-stick, and placed it in the computer. She got what she needed, and began to leave.
"Fallen! At the door!" Ghost yelled.
Sasha swung around, and pulled her weapon out. Fallen were swarming the room, the archon in lead. All of them only carried arc weapons. They're cleverer then they look.
"To many, crapcrapcrap..." She sighed.
She began thinking.
"Ghost, take the codes and go. Come back when it's safe." She flipped her light mask up.
"Guardian, what are you doing?" Ghost had fear in his voice.
She shot a vent out. "Go."
"Guardian-"
"Ghost. My name is Sasha."
She lit her hammer.
And everything went up in flames.
Ghost hovers along the tower railing. He stops, turns, looks at the traveler, and sighs.
"What's wrong, little ghost?" The guardian asks.
"My guardian was killed and I can't get her back. Her body- ashes- are deep in rasputin's bunker. I can't get in alone." Ghost replies, mellow.
"Well-" the guardian says. "I can get you down there."
Ghost looks up, and says: "Are you sure?"
"Hey." The guardian's voice lowers. "I just killed a god. I think I can help you get your guardian back."
"Alright, you may help me get my guard-" Ghost thought for a moment. "You may help me get Sasha back."
