Something I've noticed online is that while people are slowly learning not to use derogatory terms for gay/lesbian/bisexual people, they seem to be pretty openly biased against transgendered people. I'm cisgendered but have a lot of trans friends, and I guess you could say I consider myself a "trans ally" in that I speak up against transphobia where I see it and have actively worked to eradicate it from my own life.
Here are some common examples of transphobia that I see a lot:
1) referring to transgendered people by derogatory terms such as "trap"
2) insisting that women they don't like look like men or men they don't like look like women, which is indirectly transphobic because it suggests that having an appearance that subverts a strict gender binary is somehow deviant or wrong
3) refusing to call trans people by the correct pronouns (calling trans women "him" or trans men "her")
4) referring to trans people as "chicks with dicks" or other terms that imply that a trans person is anything other than the gender as which they identify
The list goes on, but I guess those would be the big examples. The sad thing is, I don't think most of the people who say those things are actively trying to be hateful or bigoted - it just seems like something they do without thinking, like being transphobic doesn't really matter. But of course, it does - not just because there are transgendered members of the Bungie community who deserve to be treated with consideration and dignity, but because as humane and thoughtful members of society (which hopefully everyone here aspires to be), the onus is on us to eradicate this kind of discrimination from our communities, both through our personal actions and through the way we treat people who do and say hateful and hurtful things.
So I'm wondering - what are your thoughts on the culture of transphobia that seems sadly prevalent on the internet, and particularly here on this site? Have you noticed it? What should we do about it? Since transphobia is really just as awful as homophobia or sexism or racism, shouldn't we treat it with a similar gravity and seriousness?

Being gay is one thing but trannies are a whole other ballpark. I don't blame people for not liking them really.

These things take time

I feel sorry for them.

The way I see it, just get rid of everyone for being human period. There are too many filthily humans on this planet. I don't care if you're black, white, male, female, gay, straight, or even trans, because at the end of the day, you suck anyway.

>Serious reply I honestly haven't had an issue with this. I have a transgender friend. Her name is Ben, but she's trying to identify by the name of Iris now. While It's hard for me to start calling her by the new name, and to think of her as a her in general, I'm still trying as we're good friends. >Reply that you were more than likely expecting Why is this tagged with #community?

Oh....it's you.

No issue on anyone being themselves as long as: > The people involved gave consent, > No harm done ( physically or mentally), > Those involved don't take criticism / disagreement as phobia / bigotry. Some people mistook freedom of expression as a free pass to say/do anything without regards of others.
-
I don't have a problem at all with trans people, or people of any specific sexual orientation. That being said, I do involuntarily find transgenders slightly repulsive, and seeing one in person always makes me sick to my stomach. That's not a basis for hatred or discrimination, though.

Looks like you scored the global hide with this one. When enough people express their dismay, the new forum software will collapse your dialogue.

If you have a dick and set of balls, you're male. If you have a vagina, you're female. This isn't rocket science, folks.

It don't bother me the slightest really. I'm not going to be agasint something which has no effect on my life and can make another person happier with theirs. If they want to hide or be open with it, that's their business. If I was friends with a guy and later on he told me he was actually female (or vice versa) it wouldn't change my opinion on them. I'm not friends with them for their gender. The only time I believe it's essential to tell someone the truth is when looking for a partner and make sure they're okay with it first.

I dont support any of it its unatural and kinda creepy to me

Edited by EnlightenedD: 9/9/2013 5:09:43 PMGay and lesbians are all over I see 10 a day at least transgender people I see maybe once a month? People aren't used to people like that not that that is an excuse to dislike/not accept them im just saying. over time people will accept it just like gays, but also with are generation there are alot more people like us who just accept every one for who they are, are children will most likely have the same beliefs. I dont care what ppl do or are into as long as there happy and there not hurting any one then who cares!

It's just another new thing down the road that's becoming more well-known and more people are becoming afraid of it.
