There are actually around 12-15 maps. I didn't count them but somewhere around there. 4 per planet and at least one variation of a map. Battle of Jakku will add at least another 4 maps but only one planet, unless that's changed. I hope so, 4 new planets would be awesome.
No, actually, I find the gunplay is superb. It takes at least some skill most of the time. And there's variety in how you die/kill. I've only gotten killed by the shotgun-equivalent all of, maybe 6 or so times? I'd much rather use a projectile based combat system than hitscan, or near-instant-hit projectiles, if it isn't hitscan.
And as for a lack of variety... If you remember, Destiny STILL has fewer game modes than Battlefront. Let me list them for you if you don't remember: Clash, Rumble, Control, Combined Arms, Elimination, Doubles, Salvage, and Skirmish. Sub-types like Inferno don't count, and neither does Trials of Osiris or Iron Banner. Battlefront has: Supremacy, Blast, Droid Run, Walker Assault, Hero Hunt, Hero Battle, Fighter Squadron, Cargo and Drop Zone.
That's still one more mode than Destiny has for it's PVP part of the game, and that's a FULL YEAR after Destiny released, which added two gamemodes. Elimination and Doubles. I think Battlefront's going to do just fine.
I have no interest in the battlefield franchise. I fully support DICE's Battlefront though. It's a beautiful, well-built and ultimately fun game.
Edit: Ah, my mistake. I forgot they added Mayhem (Which doesn't count, since it's a variant) and Rift. That makes it on par with Battlefront, a full year after Destiny's release, game-mode count wise. Still, almost none of Destiny's gamemodes are unique. Around half/over half of Battlefronts are.
