John was in the Dreadnaught doing little more than being bored. He was fighting some Hive to maybe get his hands on a few Taken soldiers to study how the link worked. But it was uneventful.
After he had torn a Thrall to shreds he turned towards the last Knight. It roared a challenge to him and took out a Cleaver. He smiled and drew his own sword in response. John felt its familiar weight and hidden power.
He charged his swing with a series of runes meaning strength, speed, and force. The combination sheered through the Knight's Cleaver and continued to his thick shoulder.
The blade slowed but did not stop. Deep cracks appeared from the impact and he gave one last push, the Knight's body going limp and being flung to the side by shear force.
He grinned and spoke mockingly.
"You lose"
He was about to sheath his sword but then he felt a little something. He didn't know what it was. He focused on it and suddenly he felt his Light being torn from his body. He screamed and felt his sword vibrate dangerously.
John had not ever felt such a presence. Even Oryx lacked to ability to shear his Light.
He felt the source. The Hull Breach. Powerful forces of an unknown energy. It felt like the burning Light of a Guardian had been spun together with the ice cold of Darkness. It almost made him sick.
John pulled himself together and began to march towards the Breach. He encountered Taken but they did little more than actually flee. But not from him. Something behind them.
He saw it. A Captain. Taken? No. This was different. A power resonated with this Captain.
He needed some really power if he was going to fight this thing. He pointed his sword to the ceiling and spoke in the language of ruins a single word.
"Absorb"
A blue rune floated above the sword and the chemical lights of the Dreadnaught dimmed. Energy flowed into him and he felt alive. More alive than ever. But he was angry. Unbelievably angry. The power fueled his rage and he turned it towards the Captain. As he got closer he saw an army followed. Mostly Vandals and Psions. He saw one or two Phalanxes
He spun his sword and leapt into the flay. The new enemies registered him as his sword smashed into the Captain. He felt the armor shatter and the flesh rip open as his body flew into a Phalanx.
The Phalanx shrugged the body off as his helmet met the point of the sword.
A Psion roared and unleashed a wave of energy. No, a radiated pulse. He planted his sword in the ground and it easily stopped the wave.
The battle raged as he learned more and more until naught but a Vandal was left. John was splattered with Ether and the pressurized fluid of the Cabal. The sword still had a Psion's arm it was planted into.
The Vandal showed no signs of fear as his hand charged with lightning and engulfed the Vandal.
That was the last of them. He stopped and contemplated how he was going to amass the energy he lost. At the end he had to dive into his own pool of Light.
John knew that wasn't it. The sickly feeling remained and he had a feeling that his presence was known.
And probably not happy.
