Chasm, as shown in the NTTE quest, can be inferred that it is the end of a timeline. Of course that also means that since the Vex are fighting against their extinction their ultimate goal is to dam the flow of time or create an island where they are safe. Back to the Vex it becomes increasingly clear that their goals are to end the timeline, at our expense of course. Which is why they are truly machines that the Stranger has good reason to hate.
