Edit: Combat rating is holding pretty steady as the clear winner of this poll.
I've tried to argue with people that skill is determined by more than KD alone, and that if you're going to judge by KD then they should go by recent kd, instead of overall.
I've argued that win % and combat rating are better indicators, but that didn't seem to go over well either.
Some people say that trials and rumble kd are much better indicators, and they might be for that particular situation, but again I don't think it shows overall skill.
What do guys think? My personal opinion is that these numbers show nothing when taken individually and it's better to look at the big picture.
Edit: alot of people are asking what combat rating is, here is my understanding; Combat rating starts at a base value of 100 for everyone, if you play 'within expectations' it doesn't change much, but if you do better or worse than those expectations it will change alot.
I think it takes the teams average combat rating, and which ever is higher is expected to win. I don't know if it accounts for individual kill/death in the same manner or not.
If a team has a much higher rating than yours and you lose, you don't lose much, but if you win you gain alot. The opposite is also true, if your team is much higher and you win you don't gain much, but if you lose than your rating is dropped alot.
I don't know how much more goes into it, someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.

Would someone mind explaining Combat Rating to me?

Edited by Jotaro Kujo PhD: 11/10/2015 6:15:09 PMWhen it comes to team games, W/L is the only thing that matters, but even that's highly conditional. W/L is only accurate if you consistently run a playlist with a full team, as there are too many variables to consider when running solo. As for free-for-all, K/D and your overall spread are all that matter.

I'll probably get flamed but KDR shows a lot of skill if not the most. Obviously I don't have to explain why.
-
Stats may get you the answer you want but the only sure way to get what you want is a field test.

Skill is determined in sweaties.

Edited by Pew First: 11/10/2015 6:26:45 PMBecause of all the issues with Destiny PVP, KDs aren't reliable. Maybe a better determining factor would be the type of kill spree medals. What type and how many. Since some of the medals do require skill and some luck. "We ran out of medals", "7th column", etc.

First: kills based by weapon. Second: character used. Third: Weapon skin used. Normally that's enough. But if need be, Forth: Ranked k/d
-
Number of double kills you get while blind folded, my overall is 1 million

Win ratio and combat rating can be good indicators. If someone has a good win ratio, they're probably pretty good. If someone has a low one, it doesn't really show anything. Many players play Crucible solo. Coming from the guy who's usually at the top of the team with a very high KD, it doesn't really matter how well you do. Winning is basically random when you play by yourself.

Kdr doesn't mean shit in PVE
-
If you are worried about K/D ratio in DESTINY. Please go back to COD, that's were people like you belong

Seriously. If you are concerned about game skill, you need to reevaluate your life purpose. Just saying.

Perfect to burnt bacon strips. If you can't cook some perfect bacon, and then enjoy a handsome amount of it, you need to change your life.

Individual skill is best shown in rumble k/d. Teamskills are hard to determin because if you get bad teammates then there is nothing you can do about it and the other team might even completely run over you destroying your k/d because of it.

No Ass Play choice?

I chose combat rating but I dunno if it is the best... Cumulative kd does not reflect how well you are atm as people improve (or even get worse!) also game type is important, in objective game modes kd is often not important. I've won many rift games for my team with the most points in my team and a negative kd becuase I focused on the objective (dunking the spark) so in some modes kd is useless. I would go so far as to say even in Control, where kills count. For example, are you a bad player if you sacrifice yourself to clear the other teams heavy spawn? No, by doing that you allow your team mates to rack up more kills and help towards the win. I'd say recent kd is important in things like rumble, elimination, clash. Not so much in other modes.
-
Combat rating is really not the best way of determining skill. As I climb up the leaderboards, my combat rating has dropped. Also, losing against people with lower CR happens all the time when you have bad teammates. That's why win percentage is essentially useless.
-
Can anyone explain how combat rating actually works?
-
Intellect. ;-)

I look at skirmish, and ToO K/D Ratio. IMO, It's usually a good indication, because you generally have a lot more 1v1 gunfights, without too many interruptions. Ruble can be inflated, because it's pretty easy to steal kills. Same with any other big team game type.
-
I chose other. Explanation: it's ping time based in a peer to peer set up with a budget net code. They do not use dedicated servers. Some benefit from this in a big way while most suffer from it.
-
Combat rating. You can play classic game modes or run only teams for a higher kd.
-
Combat rating, in my opinion, should be the deciding factor in determining skill.
