Toland* had talked with the Deathsinger. He defined himself a friend, and the Deathsinger sang him the song of Death. Hearing the song, like we did in Crota's End, "killed him." However, because he was a friend to the Deathsinger and understood the song (which he was already inclined to as a Sunsinger), his soul/light/true self continued in the green stuff behind Crota's Oversoul.
