can you die on any parts i got the first ghost but I died multiple times trying to drop down?

I died before I got the last ghost by slipping off the edge. Picked it up then the portal opened and so did the door after the taken gatelord was beaten. Opened the chest and got the ghost and a legendary arm piece.
