No one at Bungie ever said DLC was going to be free. Kotaku had an unconfirmed article detailing this, it was pure speculation, their presentation was off and people thought it was legit.
This isn't the first time Kotaku has mislead their readers. There have been 3+ articles over this past year where what they posted about Destiny has been flat-out wrong. Hence why I didn't believe them when they said 'DLC = free'.
NO OTHER GAME WORKS LIKE DESTINY DOES AND NO OTHER GAME HAS TROUBLE MAKING MONEY. PLENTY OF GAMES MAKE PLENTY OF MONEY AND STILL DON'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR PLAYERBASE.
One, the games you list are (with the exception of ME3's multiplayer) single-player games, which means they aren't paying for servers and maintenance the same way. ME3's servers are also much smaller, did not last as long, and were in-part supported by the microtransactions associated with the 'random packs' that earn you weapons, abilities, and class builds.
Two, you start the statement by saying Destiny is unique and then want it to conform to your idea. Those ideas are self-defeating when used together.
Three, plenty of games have problems making money. And plenty of games 'take advantage of their player base' as I believe you see it. A phrase like this adds nothing to the discussion. Your definition of 'taking advantage' is significantly more restricted than mine. I believe that silver is another profit stream that, so far, has no impact on the power level of the game. There is no reason to dislike it except if you believe what many other believe.
They believed that the community was funding the DLCs by purchasing silver. Except the purchasing of the silver was the BUY THE SILVER, nothing else. What happens to that money afterwards is up to the business, not the customers. If they give something back to the community, great. But people expecting Bungie to give away things because of separate content purchasing is unrealistic. And to further expect this content to go to everyone, including the people who did not spend any of the money that supposedly 'needs' to fund the free content, is borderline insanity.
Anything in addition to initial content of a game you purchase isn't deserved, it's gifted. A person doesn't DESERVE free things, they shouldn't EXPECT free things, they should EARN things. Whether it's through energy, time, intelligence, money, or some other form of currency a person has to figure out if their investment will be worth the gains. This is how everything in a living organism's life works. You thought the time spent on you post, OP, was worth it. I thought my time spent on a rebuttal was worth it. Neither of us sat here, looking at our computer, waiting for someone to make our arguments and rebuttals for us. Because, you know, we don't EXPECT people to FREELY pluck the CONTENT from our heads and do the work for us.
