He sacrificed himself against Cell. An enemy that could have been shut down early if they didn't want to wait around to see his perfect form.
He saves the world not because he cares about it, but because he wants to win a good fight.
He abandoned his family 4 times in the series. 3 of those times were completely unnecessary.
1. He could have been revived after fighting Raditz, but opted to stay dead to train with King Kai to beat Vegeta and Nappa.
2. After defeating Frieza he was wished to be back on Earth, but Shenron told them that he declined. He didn't want to be back with his family so he could continue training. He never told them he was alive. He never reached out to them to let them know where he was. He straight abandoned them.
3. He stayed dead for nearly a decade even though he could have been revived. He remained dead throughout Gohan's adolescence and Goten's entire childhood.
4. He left his family to train Uub for no good reason, even though he has instant transmission and could live with his family and train Uub during the day (like a job?).
I met Sean Schemmel and Christopher Sabat in July, and even they laughed and made fun of how Goku is a terrible person and even a more terrible father.
