Yet there is very little outrage over this prime example of consumer abuse.
Because it isn't consumer abuse, and it's ridiculous to think that it is. - Bungie never stated that they wouldn't continue to produce DLC/expansions for sale. It was speculated that money from microtransaction sales would go toward funding future content, but as far as I know that was unconfirmed and based on 2nd hand accounts from an IGN interview. That of course doesn't mean that it isn't true, but it also doesn't mean that microtransactions were ever going to be the only way additional content was funded. - It's very possible that microtransactions are allowing Bungie to do smaller events (like last weeks Halloween event) that might not otherwise fit into their budget/timetable. - It's unlikely that microtransactions of the type we've seen in the game so far would have ever generated enough money to pay for the kind of content we saw with TDB and HoW . While I don't think anyone would have described either of those expansions as a great value or packed full of content, I also don't think it's realistic to expect that much content to be financed by microtransactions and released for free. - There's no consumer abuse happening here. Bungie offered a game for sale. They offered 3 expansions for sale. They've offered emotes for sale. They've delivered on all of that. Despite what you may think, no promises were broken. No fraud took place. The idea that there's some kind of argument for consumer abuse is absurd and fueled by nothing except entitlement. I know people here like to immediately dismiss any argument that includes the word entitlement, but that's all this is. You paid for a game and got a game. You paid for expansions and got expansions. You paid for emotes and got emotes. Now you feel like you're entitled to more without paying, and you're ready to claim abuse because you haven't gotten it. Thats entitlement.

  • the cognitive dissonance is strong in this one. You do realize that Bungie specifically refrained from saying they would do future expansions for free so that if they decided to still have paid DLC they could say, exactly what you just said. You are basically doing exactly what they wanted to happen. Still they left the language vauge enough in their announcement article so that people would get the impression that they meant DLC, while also having someone "leak" info to Kotaku about it. This way they could stem the tide of anger towards micro-transactions since they knew a ton of people would not be happy. They could basically say, "but dont' worry guys you'll get the DLC for free" while not legally saying it. I've been involved in campaigns like this before and it stinks of so much spin and PR it's gross. Here is their quote from the news announcement: "Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year. It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests." To most people that sounds like hey everything for the next year is going to be funded by these micro-transactions. Maybe you think of yourself as so supremely intelligent that you weren't fooled but a significant portion of the fan base and numerous people arguing with people who were angry over micro-transactions on these very forums can attest to it. They even tried to get confirmation from Cozmo or Deej on whether or not it was true and all they got was silence. So maybe stop sticking up for a company that so freely screws over people for their hard earned dollars.

I don't think of myself as supremely intelligent, but I was intelligent enough to read the statement and understand exactly what it was instead of pretending like it meant we would all be getting free DLC for the next year. The statement said: "Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year. It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests." And that's exactly what has happened as far as anyone can tell, isn't it? Nowhere in the statement does it say that there won't be anymore paid DLC for Destiny. there's no indication of this anywhere. What it does say is that the live team will be making use of those funds to, among other things, introduce new events. Less than a month later we have a new multi week event that none of us had to pay for. You can pack your entitlement and conspiracy theories up and go home. I'm tired of that attitude. No one was screwed over. No one was cheated. No one was lied to. You and people like you are just entitled jerks who like to throw tantrums because you think they deserve more than what you got.

  • That Halloween event was not fun nor rewarding. It was strictly another money grab to get players to spend money on worthless items.

  • I had fun. I enjoyed it. i didn't pay anything for it. It's your loss if you didn't enjoy it. This community spent all year whining for more free content, and when you get it all you do is whine that it's not what you wanted. You didn't need to spend any money to enjoy the event.

  • You know what's delicious? Playing a game I enjoy and not being a petty, paranoid child who think a video game publisher is involved in a massive multi year conspiracy to steal a few dollars from them.

  • Holy shit. I have read this "entitlement" argument so many places. NOBODY cares about being given FREE CONTENT. People aren't whining because we aren't being handed content for free. We want to PAY for GOOD content. We do not want to be force fed microtransaction filled "free" content that is going to fund more microtransaction filled "free" content. You can say it's entitlement, but this is your ignorance. You're not even attempting to understand what people are saying.

  • I want to say that you are wrong, but in fact I think we're talking about two different things entirely. Two different groups of people. The people you're describing ARE NOT the people I'm describing. And yes, there is a lot of entitlement here. If you can't see it that's (as you put it) your ignorance. The last 12 months on this forum has seen non stop complaining for free content, that the content provided in the base games or expansions wasn't adequate, that expansions should be free or much cheaper, that much of the expansion content should be provided for free to people who didn't pay for it, that people should boycott the expansion because it's too expensive or unless additional content is offered for free... it goes on and on, and has for over a year. and it is entitlement. The idea that, after having revived something that you paid a fair amount for you somehow deserve to get more. Yes, we all want more. Of course. Feeling like you deserve it is the problem. Feeling entitled to it is the problem. What you're talking about is a separate issue which I don't really disagree with at all. but you're confusing and conflating the two issues.

  • There's a lot of entitlement running around. And it's also lame that people think they we ripped off. If you didn't like the content of the original, WHY would you buy more? Also, books get made in to THREE movies all the time. The media industry cuts stuff up and feeds it to us ALL. THE. TIME. And we accept it...

  • But this chopped story is a first for a computer game and unfortunately we let it happen. Our trust in an experienced studio has been abused. If any other studio other than Bungie (and maybe Bethesda) did this then there would be uproar. It's not entitlement, it's called being ripped off. It's being fed a pack of lies about the original base game and overcharged for shit DLC's. It's worse than an abusive husband/spouse... It's -blam!-! -blam!- of the wallet.

  • You weren't ripped off. Explain what you paid for that you didn't get? You weren't lied to. Explain what Bungie promised you that they didn't deliver on? You weren't overcharged. Millions of people bought the content at the asked for price. You weren't required to buy it. You had a choice. It was up to you. You may have decided later that you don't think the content was worth the price, but prices aren't set by individual preference.
