How do you gain Legendary Marks as a solo player

I am a PVEer. I play strictly play story and patrol. I play strikes only because it is part of the story. I currently have my light at 200. It's too low to play daily story heroic missions, but all good lv 40 items require Legendary Marks to buy. I'm currently playing House of Wolves storyline and have not done the Taken DLC as of yet. Should I just advance through the story until RNG grants me items to make my light above 280?What to do? Edit: Just want to thank everyone for the suggestions. Definitely will apply every tip that was given.

Finis the story and the Quest lines. 1. Your light level is appropriate to the House of Wolves content, which was light 160-170 under the current system. 2. You'll get gear to drop that will let you raise your light level to the point where you can then start to do the activities that award marks. 3. Many fo the strories and quest lines at the end of The Taken King story actually award you Legendary marks----or even Legendary gear-----for completing them. So I would worry more about completing the quests and stories, and not worry about marks. Vendor gear----right now----is eight of the old light levels above your head right now.
