I dont think the traveler is evil. But I do have a feeling the traveler is either a thief/coward or both. There was a ghost somewhere that hinted that what actually kept the traveler around was rasputin, not its own sacrifice.

It also appears to be a machine working off of some sort of code or computer based logic system. It's running from planet to planet trying to golden age super power up every race it comes across to try and make something that can stop the Hive. When it's logic determines that the race it powered up can't win it moves to the next planet to save itself and find another species to power up. Rinse repeat for thousands of years while being chased by the Hive and the darkness(or the deep) that it serves. Coward seems to work but it also might just be following its programming. Personally my theory is that's it is farming races for light. Creating artificial golden ages and then draining all the energy they create (there have also been hints at a Fallen utopia that was eventually invaded by the vex). I think the traveler uses the energy (light) as fuel, and cultivates then leaves. The darkness that follows is either a conglomeration of pissed off marks, enemies, or some other relation entirely. The light we use is just a side effect of it being stalled out by Rasputin. Then again thats just my geeked out theory.
