In a recent interview Joe Staten's original story had the traveler as a secretly evil entity. When Jason Jones and other Bungie heads saw the super cut they decided it was to predictable and changed it. Honestly , this is the oldest story trope in history , (good guy is actually evil). I am so glad Bungie changed this aspect of the story as people were already theorizing about this before the game even released.
