Smart on their part. Instead of grinding for a month and be done, they're extending play time until the next dlc. Normally I'd be done by this point but since there's always more I'm still having fun

Exactly. These entitled brats want everything now.

Don't be that person that says "entitled" We paid for the -blam!-ing game you -blam!- so yeah we are "ENTITLED" to what we paid for. They didn't say before the release "here's all these beautiful new exotics available with taken king, but wait a minute.. There's a catch.. Some of these exotics won't even be available until months and months after the release. Yes we here at Bungie understand you're going to be frustrated, that's why at the time of writing this we're going to destroy this message and pretend it never existed" -blam!- waiting, it's not extending your play time, I won't play the game anymore until the new missions appear, and then I'll do those and hop off again. Which would be exactly the same as if they were all available when taken king released. This is just a ploy so they can say "the taken king remains popular, even in the New Year. We have a record number *insert ludicrous number here* of players online each day. That's going to look good for advertising the longevity of the game and making it look as though it's filled with content, then the poor sod that picks up the game thinking "omg this lasted players for almost 4 months and they're still playing" only to find out it's actually lacking and we're only still here because we are waiting for the next time gated mission to pop up. -blam!- Bungie.

sure ur comming back to pick up where the quest left off, dont mean there is more play time. bet ya lots of people get as far as they can on the quest, then go to a different game till they can finish the quest.
-
You're right. It DOESNT extend actual play time. But what it does do is keep the game on people's mind. Many would finish and grind out the game within a month and not play. But by time gating and keeping you guessing, you check the forums daily to make sure you aren't missing anything. You log on to do that next step of the quest. All of this gives them another opportunity to catch you and keep you a little while longer cause you know... Who wants to just log on for a quest step... If you took the time and effort, you'll probably run a patrol or run a strike or bs around. This makes the world seem more populated. They can also intentionally time gate things on major release dates. I bet sleeper stimulant will be back November 10th. That is the day ESO DLC comes out and Fallout 4. They are anticipating losing players, but if they make it so that you have to come back because of a new timed exotic, they can peak your interest long enough not to leave.
-
Thing is that ya the world will seem more populated, for a day or two while people finish a quest. Sleeper was that way with the warsats, dropped off fast after a few days. They could release content of specific days, to counter other games. Either people just wont care since they know it will come again, or hop on and finish in quickly. Sure thinking about destiny is fine and dandy, but bungie and Activision want numbers and facts to show.
-
Yes they do, and while I do not have numbers I can show, I'm sure this is a trial run for them. The first time doing time gates. If numbers do remain higher, we will probably continue to see time gates next DLC.
