Looking over the fallen lore. I think sevitors are pretty much ghosts. The traveler gave then to the fallen and fled the darkness. Leaving them to die and fight it back so it could get away.
The traveler did the same to us in earth. Only, we attacked the traveler so it cluld not excape as it had planned.

Servitors simply manufacture ether

The ether keeps the fallen alive. On a head shot all you see is ether excaping the body, that ether is refered to as the fallen's soul.

The first Ghosts were created in our Collapse. Servitors were Fallen-built

I think there is a card that says otherwise somewhere. That they rebuilt the one in the prison and it was fake and needed a constant supply of ether for it to remain alive
