I always thought the traveller as a generous guest being hunted. He will lavish you until those who want him dead arrive, and flees if it believes you are unable to defend it.
My only point of confusion is its inexplicable early departure from the home of the fallen.

His name is 'Traveller'. He come, he give gifts, he go. He is pursued by Darkness but we don't know if he left all species that he touched because the Darkness was incoming or because these betrayed his expectations.
