From the Kotaku article, which I recommend reading, the Diablo III developers gave Bungie a talk about what did and did not work with Diablo III.
“They were saying, like, ‘Hey, random numbers are not fun—dice rolls are not fun. You can give the illusion of randomness, but you want to weight it towards the player… The only point you have to deliver on is that when people leave your game—because they will—when they leave your game, they need to be happy.’”
Let's settle this. Are the Diablo III devs right. Are random numbers not fun? Is Bungie in the right for pushing random rewards? Is there a middle ground? Vote!
Edit: Bungie should heed these results. The overwhelming majority like the idea of RNG in theory but not practice. Whatever Bungie is doing to affect randomness in our favor, it isn't working.

HOW IS IT THAT IM NOT SUPPOSED TO GET THE SAME THING BUT I STILL GET THE SAME THING. It's because I'm black rng racist. Like when I had to GRIND for husk literally grind. *random says* '"but they increased it to a 150%chance" DUHH BUT IT STILL TOOK ME TWO DAYS 30+ tries

This is the first post where I see positive comments about Destiny RNG. You either are paid by Bungie, not in the game for long enough, or just a crowd that thinks differently. I respect your opinion wherever you stand. I am just very surprised. I've ran raids more times than I can remember to either get things I already had received (i.e.: 10 Mida Multi-tool) or shards/energy. I have never received Gjallarhorn and Hunger of Crota. The Crota Boots only dropped for me twice and only after many attempts. I did get the Crux of Crota 3 times though. To me and my team it has been extremely frustrating to dismantle an Exotic someone has never been able to get, and have no option to give it away instead or exchange w/ the other player. To me, Destiny RNG is one of the main problems in the game and one I do not believe Bungie will ever fix.

A certain amount of randomness adds a sense of mystery and excitement. The thing is, the randomness needs to be heavily weighted so that players feel like they are consistently receiving rewards that are worth their effort, even if those rewards are randomized. Destiny has the problem of their random reward tables including too many lackluster possibilities and not being weighted enough towards the good stuff.

The problem is that RNG this loose and without parameters is not fun. Bungie is failing at their mission of "having people leave happy". Due to the horrible RNG and boring grind, most people are leaving, frustrated, annoyed or angry.

I like the RNG, adds a bit of longevity to the game imo.

Rng is fine. True rng on regular stuff is perfectly fine. Bosses however need a loot table specific to them especially in raids. What if: each boss had a different set of gear that did different stuff and it was rng which piece you will get and/or materials to make said gear.

I play D&D, so I think dice rolls are fun. I'm also a computer programmer, so I find random numbers fun......I'm weird.

Never seen it said better

Well, Diablo is an amazing franchise that has seen much success. Bungie only has halo, really. Considering blizzard knows how to work drops and how to develop their games quite well and have lots of experience working with that style, Bungie would be wise to listen to Blizzard.

Random is fun. It's just that Destiny doesn't feel random because. Golgoroth is dead. I got 2 shards.
