I'm going to use TV shows as an example of "time gating" vs releasing all at once.
I like to watch a lot of shows, including The Walking Dead. I also like some of the Netflix original shows, like Bojack Horseman.
I get about 6 months or so of weekly entertainment from The Walking Dead a year. They have two half seasons spread with a smaller break between, and a larger break between the full seasons. They also now supplement the main show with Fear the Walking Dead between main seasons. I can now look forward to watching The Walking Dead nearly year round.
I watched the entirety of Bojack Horseman season 1 within 48 hours of its release. Same with season 2. I now wait months between seasons.
Which show gives me more consistent entertainment? Which one do I remember more about between episodes/seasons? Which one do I finish an episode of, then spend the rest of the week waiting for, versus mindlessly hitting "next"?
