It's not so much that you cannot turn off the game or the screen or whatever. It has to do with the sheer magnitude of comments and hatred from people online that you see. And to be honest just turning it off doesn't work. Because in order for that to work you would have to never turn it on again. If you're being bullied through facebook or twitter or something like that, the people will still be there no matter how long you stay away from it. Also it has to do with already having a negative mindset or bad outlook about yourself. If you already are in that situation and then someone comes in and continually is that mean to you it makes it worse.

  • yes there will always still be the people who say harsh things on the internet. guess what there are those same people in the real world. if being on the internet is a source of pain and you continue to partake in it you are a glutton for punishment. if every time you walked through a certain door you got punched how long would it take you to stop going through the door? I'm not defending those who are the "bullies", but at some point each person must either rise above the negative comments and see their own worth, move on to safer ground to avoid such things, or keep taking it. the world is a cruel place.

  • You're example is not the same. It would be more like what if every door you walked through no matter where, you got punched? That is a better analogy. However, you are right in that people need to rise above it. And while I agree that the world is a cruel place, I also think it is important to point out that cruel people are very good at selecting their victims and becoming relentless in their taunting and harassment. Think of it like this: what if I decided that I didn't like you. And I would start by finding every post you've made on this forum and then commenting something negative or detrimental on those posts. Then I use your gamertag to find out your social media profliles (believe me it is very easy to do) and then I harass you on every social media account you have. Then I use your social media information to harass you in real life. It isn't about just rising above the harassment. It is about something needing to be done to prevent people from doing this. To make the point clearer, this happened to me with xbox live when I first got my xbox live account. I played a lot of call of duty modern warfare and one guy decided that he didn't like me for whatever reason and so he started to send me harassing messages. Then he found my facebook profile (which I keep private) and was able to get past the private block (through means that I am unaware of) and went through to comment on every one of my pictures and then all of my posts. He even went so far as to taunt and attack my family members that I had connected on my facebook profile. Then I started receiving death threats through the mail (your xbox live account is hooked to a credit card and thus your address is available via that information). Eventually I had to have Microsoft give his information to the police to get a restraining order and having charges filed for harassment and the death threats. There are some people who are so hateful and so determined to attack and belittle people that they will stop at nothing. Obviously my situation is not one that is common but believe me that it happens.

  • except my xbox account is not linked by credit card, if you took all the time to comment and find my social media I wouldn't care. I understand how settings work and can block you, ignore you, and honestly not care in the least that your every waking moment is dedicated to me. send me something in the mail I would not open it, trash goes in the trash. a person can only bully you if you allow them to, how much you accept what they throw at you is up to you. at the most any of the things you listed would be a minor inconvenience, at at the most more dangerous for whoever would be so bold as to send me death threats. I do understand that everyone isn't taught how to handle these things, the youth of today are so fragile minded and petty. no matter what a bully only goes as far as they are allowed, their sick kicks come from knowing they bothered you, because they are so miserable them selves they want to spread it, if it doesn't bother you they tire of funless game and move on to weaker prey.

  • First, how do you pay your xbox live account without a credit card? And second the biggest problem for me was that I was already in a bad place when that happened. I have had several family members who were alcoholics and when they got sober they ended up killing themselves. That is something that messes with your psyche and affects you profoundly. It isn't a matter of the youth of today being weak or unable to handle it. It has more to do with the proliferation of hatred that is spread by people through the internet. You may say that you could handle it perfectly and that it wouldn't affect you; but I guarantee that you don't know how "easy" it would be to handle until it actually happens to you. And it isn't as simple as saying "don't let it bother you" that's like lighting someone on fire and saying "just don't let the fire burn you." I agree with you to an extent that it has a lot to do with the victim's ability to rise above it but we have also reached a point where people that bully others are just looked at as a nuisance who cannot actually cause any damage to a person - and that is just not the case.

  • It is that the youth are weak. They are raised under the everyone gets a ribbon lifestyle. Coddled and told everyone is the same. They are not. Instead of being taught tolerance of difference, and confidence in who they are children are forced to believe participation will be enough for success. They are not taught to develop their own strengths and advance with them instead they are taught to fit in. I am a father with adult children and grandchildren, mine know who they are, what they are capable of, and how to handle life even when it seems unfair. The generation gap is huge. Oh you do know you can buy time at any store that sells games right?

  • First, there is still a transaction link that hooks your personal information to your xbox live account. But lets not focus on that. I was never coddled. I was never taught that participation was all that mattered. I played football and lacrosse in a town that is really well known for its level of competition. These were not teams where everyone made it. They were not teams where everyone got play time. You had to earn it and you had to be worthy of it. But that does not somehow immunize me from ridicule or torment. While I am happy that you have not raised your children to feel that everything should be handed to them, I think you are somewhat missing what I am saying. No one is safe from the detriment of bullying. You may believe wholeheartedly in who you are and be totally confident in yourself and still face issues when someone verbally attacks you for what they perceive to be flaws in your personality or who you are. I will say that after the incident that I mentioned I did learn better to rise above things and to be more able to let taunting go. It was more the invasion of my life that person committed. They were able to get my personal information with little to no effort at all. I don't believe that we need to coddle our children at all. I think, as you have alluded, that that ideal would only make things worse. However, I think that something needs to be done as far as the people who are so able to pick targets and maliciously attack them. When a bully finds someone who has faced issues in their life that make them a prime target for ridicule they are merciless. To give you some idea of what its like, it would be like if I was playing against you in the crucible and I found that there was no way for you to stop me from shotgunning you to death. And then from there I found a way to constantly pinpoint you in the game a sought you out to ensure that I killed you as many times as possible. And then that I stayed in that same match with you as long as you were there and that even if I was on your team I still sought to make you helpless to shotgun attacks. When someone truly decides that they are going to stop at nothing to make your life a living hell, they will find a way to accomplish that.
