Supers in Destiny: The current state of what's overpowered.

Ahh the wonderful world of Destiny, where Titans run around acting like Thor when he's pissed off, kicking ass in the crucible by throwing their toys around. Warlocks acting like the Emperor from Star Wars, floating around graciously sizzling this shit out of every enemy that gets in their way. And the Hunters, who run around like Jennifer Lawrence spearing guardians with their broken arrows. All of which, have been called "Overpowered". But, as is always the way with this community, we often stick to one specific class. Our 'Main' class if you like. We never call our own class overpowered, we simply exploit our own broken classes for as long as we can until something gets nerfed. Warlocks, this doesn't really concern you, as from what I can see and from what I've been reading on the forums for the last month or so, your 'Super' is not as overpowered as the remaining classes. Hunters, we (yes, I'm a Hunter) rant on about how overpowered the Hammer of Sol is, even after the recent patch. Often, real life arguments break out regarding the differences between the two classes. The Nightstalker is undoubtedly broken. It's no meant to act and play the way it does now. Unlimited arrows? This is not an in-game mechanic, this is a loophole which many Hunters have been exploiting, and more and more people are noticing (specifically in PVP games). Yet, we never make posts regarding how our own Super is awfully overpowered... Titans, you old dogs you. You run around the Crucible maps waiting for your supers to charge up, then as soon as that pretty yellow bar becomes charged you find a bunch of guardians and go full Bob The Builder on their shit. Then, you can often hear the faint cry of a sad, broken guardian. You guys are the lucky ones. Not only do you have a very powerful Super to use, you're the only class of guardian who, when using the HoS, can't be one shot by a Hunters Golden Gun. Overpowered? My opinion is yes, but only slightly overpowered. (I'm now waiting for a Titan player to jump on this post and say "Get gud"... which, for those who fail at the English language, is spelled "Good". I can't begin to tell you how many posts have been made telling guardians to "Stop saying the HoS is overpowered!". Why do you think this is? Well, allow me to break it down for you all. (This relates to every class). Using a specific class as our 'Main Class' is the key factor. We play as a class that we know best, and feel most comfortable in the play style and unique combat mechanics of said class. We therefor, like to feel slightly more powerful above the remaining two classes, whichever they may be in your case. Hunters are generally quite bad for this. As soon as people started noticing the exploit occurring with the Nightstalker subclass we (me not included I might add) took to the forums to comment on every post titled "Nerf the Nightstalker" to tell people to leave it alone... But Titans... I'm afraid you take the trophy on this one. I would like to make it very clear that I'm not aiming this at every single Titan in the Destiny universe... before anyone starts crying about it. Their are a few of you who produce these comical posts telling Warlocks and Hunters to stop feeling so butt hurt about them getting smashed in the face with their hammers. But, the simple fact is the Hammer of Sol subclass is an overpowered one. If you wish to deny it, you may. But if you're going to deny it, switch to a Gunslinger Hunter and attempt to one shot a HoS Titan with your Golden Gun. Now, not only can this not be done, due to the slow fire rate of the Golden Gun a HoS Titan can throw a hammer before we line up a second shot, which we Hunters shouldn't have to do in order to take down a single guardian. The idea of the Golden Gun in the Crucible is to be able to have three shots that will, as long as your on target, one shot a guardian. No matter how high their general stats are. The ability to survive one of these shots should not be possible in a PVP match where level advantages are disabled, or even enabled for that matter. The Bottom Line: The Hunters Nightstalker subclass is currently broken, a loophole has been found that simply shouldn't exist in the game. Unfortunately, people will continue to exploit this until it inevitably gets patched. Do you remember what I said about how we like to feel more powerful? This is exactly my point, proven by the amount of bow and arrow maniacs in the Crucible. The Titans Hammer of Sol recently had a nerf. Specifically, the patch notes said (no quote) that you would be able to throw less hammers overall. Fair enough. It stopped a few angry ten year olds from crying but sadly the issue regarding health was not addressed is this patch. A HoS Titan still can't be killed by one shot from a Golden Gun, the only class and subclass combination that I know of that can survive a single shot from the Golden Gun. The Solutions: The Hunters Nightstalker Super simple needs to be fixed. We shouldn't be able to use and abuse it the way I've seen many people do. Without this loophole, the Nightstalker is a very balanced Super. The Titans Hammer of Sol still needs to be thought out more. I can't say this without making a Titan player cry but the armour bonus when using the HoS is undoubtably too high. A reduction by 10% (this percentage based on my own experience looking at the remaining health) would easily fix this. I honestly have no solution for the hammer throwing part though. Perhaps slower throw rate compensated by increased agility to make us for the time per kill loss. I would like to add that I'm not digging into a certain class, the words you have read have been of my own opinion, as are my ideas to fix what many people are calling "overpowered". Feel free to leave your comments and opinions below. Maybe even suggest your own ideas on how the issues raised should be addressed. Bungie clearly need help on how to revive their own game, so let's do the work for them and come up with intelligent ideas that they can use, from the guardians who put hours upon hours into their game. If you read all of this, I'm impressed. Low out. Edit 1: Looking into the Bungie weekly update 15/10/15 (see the news section), the Nightstalker Shadowshot will be getting its well needed nerf. As of now we do not know exactly how they will be achieving this, but I'm intrigued to see what they can come up with. Edit 2: I realise I have refrained from going into detail about the Warlocks. I've just read a number of posts on the feedback forums where the majority of people think that the Stormcaller's super ability lasts too long (even some Warlocks have admitted this). From my personal experience, I was killed by a Stormcaller Warlock. I respawned and a few moments later I was killed by the same Warlock using the same super. Please bare in mind that this occurred when playing a match on Mayhem Rumble, there was no ten second respawn delay which would have avoided being killed twice within the time of one super being active.

  • Well you also got to think about the armor that gives you more armor overall when you use a certain subclass. This is just a theory that I think is the problem.

Nice post. I enjoyed your comedy, and you made good points too :) I want to point out however, that with the appropriate perks a single Golden Gun shot isn't going to kill ANY titan while their super is active. Everyone and their mother knows about the Sunbreaker and their ability to soak damage. However, the Striker gains similar damage resistance from the Unstoppable perk. With Unstoppable, I have personally seen Strikers laugh at EVERY kind of conventional weapon and shake off Golden Gun hits. I have even heard of them surviving Nova Bombs. Now, a Defender is even HARDER to kill. An extra shot ain't gonna do the job -the Gunslinger is going to have to expend their entire super to take him out. And even then, with bonus armor from the Untouchable perk, bonus armor from TTK body armors, bonus armor from the sword, the sword's guard ability, and Blessing of Light/Force Shield, I am not at all confident that the one remaining shot will be enough every time anymore. I main a Defender, and every time I see a Hunter activate a Golden Gun I just run away out the back side of my bubble and let him eat my Ward. Then he has one shot, no targets, and zero kills. But next time I see one break out the big gun, I am gonna pull my sword, raise the shield and see what happens.

I'll say this: yesterday I stormtranced in a match and wiped the entire team...TWICE. Yet if one person would have simply shot me, I would have died shortly after throwing my super. But instead of shooting they all ran, I chased them down, arc chain kill them, then glided towards their spawn. I hit in their spawn as they spawned...pretty cheap, I know. Pretty cool to get someone 2 or even 3 times with the SAME super! I guess they all seem OP...but I tell you now, I definitely do NOT get health and shields with every ability kill. I wish I did... (I know you didnt mention the scrubby warlock...I got jealous)

      • Just reduce the armour on hammer very slightly and stop the hunter bow spam. Pretty balanced.

The thing about warlocks, when in super they are very squishy, and they need to be in almost shotgun range to use the power. This means that unless you round a corner and surprise people you're not going to make it to the enemy while running down a hall. The warlock can easily be shot down with any weapon before they get to you. You have to choose between the power having range or chaining. You also have to choose between landfall and doubling the chain. I prefer to run extra chain, some prefer to run landfall. The power lasts as long as radiance does, difference is you can choose to have the extended duration, but this only happens if you have your grenade and melee full when you cast it. Out of all the new classes the warlock class is the most balanced. Titans need either the heal on kill or the damage reduction/health bonus removed. One or the other would put it in balance with the others. Hunters are fine, they are just broken right now. Once the bug is fixed all will be right with the world.

        • What people fail to connect in a lot of cases is that its a super vs a super. First of all, someone is going to be getting obliterated, that's the point of supers, weither its you, you and a buddy, you and a stranger, or your entire team, someone is gonna get blown up at some point. Secondly, Golden Gun can 1 hit any guardian not in a super, I'm confident we are all aware of that from Year 1. But saying a HoS titan is the only one who can survive 1 shot from Golden gun is wrong. Defenders using their bubble, which is their super, could survive 1 Golden Gun bullet, and this has been around since Day 1. In both cases it would take 2 golden gun shots to kill a titan in their super. Now the difference is that HoS is much more offensive while still being in their super, but health regen on kills is not really that much different than instant overshield for walking in and out of their bubble. Is HoS overpowered? Well, I think all the supers are over powered, which is the point of a super. If you face one without your super you will die unless the other person messes up. The idea of Golden Gun not 1 hitting every guardian in their super is not new, it was the exact same with defender all of year 1.

          • Warlocks with ram, max armour and radiant skin need 2 shots. A better argument would be that they're the only super that survives a point blank headshot from the highest impact sniper.

Aside from broken game mechanics such as the Shadowshot glitch, I think Shadowshot is fair. Annoying, suppresses supers and long range. Pretty much what you'd expect from a hunter. The Titan subclass is worked entirely around the super. My one and only grievance is the over shield. I think a headshot with a sniper of decent impact and a GG shot should always be a OHK. I know Sunsingers get one but in all fairness, their animation is terribly long and they can't throw a multi-kill, AOE exploding fire hammer of hell at people. The Warlock subclass is, in my eyes, actually the most overpowered. As someone who mains a hunter, their over shield seems to be stronger than bladedancer. The duration is a tad long but my biggest problem is when Stormtrancers use superconductor. I've had a warlock kill me and I was the fourth chain in their line of destruction and I couldn't even see them. Although not seeing them isn't the issue, the problem was the closest guardian was (what I'm basing off visual perception of space in game) roughly 20 feet away from me. I specifically moved back to avoid being chained but nope. Also they have fantastic grenades. All in all, very minor tweaking should be done.

Absolutely, because supers shouldn't be supers at all, they should be ordinary, or better yet mediocre. Use a loaf of bread, and toss a slice at the opposing team. You're not going to be happy until this happens anyway. Says the idiot with only two characters, and a hunter "main" lol. Idiot muted.

I agree with a lot of this. Sunbreakers are very powerful in their super state. Honestly the real issue with nerf/buff is where the line is drawn in PvE and PvP. If you nerf their overshield for PvP reasons, their PvE effectiveness suffers. Sunbreakers need to be approached cautiously if any more fixes are applied to them so that they still remain a fun class and a viable option for those that main the titan. I main a warlock and simply adore Stormcaller. I use transcendence, which allows you to extend your supers duration provided you are mindful of your melee and grenade, in hopes of making those big plays in PvP. Win some you lose some in that department. However this perk shines mostly in PvE. If I am close to being killed I can panic super and if I meet the requirements of transcendence I can fully heal myself instantly on top of high mob clearing potential. Stormtrance is all about that mob control. And it does the job very effectively. Nightstalker is truly not given enough credit. People are so used to the offensive supers that a support/defensive one throws them off. Shadowshot is not meant to be a killing super. It is meant to open up a window for you and your teammates. When I do use my Nightstalker in Crucible (which I am really suck at most of the time) I never aim for the kill. If I kill with it, that is fine. But if I hear a bad super go off I shoot at the environment around the opponents. If I played my super properly then I shut down their super and opened up a window for my allies. Heavy ammo about to drop? Let me see if I can deny the opposing team of heavy by placing a tether on a ammo crate before picking them off. Simply put, Shadowshot, while still being able to kill in PvP, is better used creating openings for your teammates. Though the infinite super NEEDS to go! I should not be tethered by the same dude four times in a row.

                • Ok, I didn't read the whole thing. This Golden Gun nonsense needs to stop. There are countless videos online with Golden Gun one-shotting titans. I personally have NEVER seen a titan survive a golden gun shot when I use my hunter. And conversely, I've NEVER survived a Golden Gun shot on my Titan with full maxed out solar armor. If it's taking you two shots to down a titan, either You missed your first shot, or maybe it's lag. But I have NEVER, ever, ever seen a titan survive my Golden Gun.

The only time the Stormtrance lasts too long is with an added perk that substantially increases the length of the Trance... Provided both your Grenade AND Melee are charged. Stormtrance also gets very little in the way of added armor during use, and your movement speed is slowed unless you have Ionic Blink equipped.

                    • I don't feel it is op and not saying that because I main a titan but with out using my super to counter I have better luck taking on a sunbreaker vs taking on a blade dancer. Now each super is op in its own way, nova bomb can't be dodged, stupid hard to shoot down arc blade, fist of panic well its has its own quarks. Every class has its points that can seem op but are at the same time vulnerable to multiple other supers .. it just makes people have to change their game play sometimes and no one really likes changing themselves when there is a way to get it chang ed fir them.. just my thoughts...

                          • I'm a Titan main. I agree with most of your post. Just sucks that when the class is nerfed cause of PvP it will also affect PvE. I'll just adapt like I always have, but it still sucks. Honestly, GG and Bladedancers could use a buff. It wouldn't hurt since a one shot in Crucible is expected and it would help in PvE. My only plea is not to reduce the number of Hammers. I'm not a Hunter and shouldn't play like one(3 hammers)
