As for Bungie telling us about gear obsolescence, perhaps they should have. But would we, as a community, been receptive? Probably not.
Genrally speaking, its natural to resist change. We fear the unknown, and cling to the known.
Sometimes, the transition is more acceptable when its forced. When we choose change, its hard to accept it because there is always the possibility of going back. When there is no going back, the only way is forward. You are now ready to accept the change and can grow within it.

The honorable thing to do would have been to explain why obsolescence was necessary as soon as the decision was made. If there's a good reason, I and others would have understood.

Others have tried to explain, ad nauseum. But, like I explained to OP, they won't listen. Much like a child who doesn't understand why eating cookies before dinner will spoil his appetite.
