Now, let me start off by saying, I'm not against this. I don't think it's going to be "pay to win". But is it going to give some people an easier way to gain items?? Quite possibly!
If you look at this link ( http://db.destinytracker.com/items/consumables/consumable ), you will see a few consumable items that are quite evident, these could be payable transactions to increase your chances at drops. I will probably pay for some of these (depending on cost) if I see I'm not getting jack squat in the raid, or I'm getting the same items over and over.
But here is the kicker... currently I have run the raid and beat it 5x on one of my characters. I have gotten a Chest piece 3x, NO boots, NO helm, and NO gauntlets.
So, I'm a prime candidate for purchasing one of these consumables to help me get items I don't have. But... I can tell you this.... YOU WILL HAVE A BUNCHA PISSED people on your hands, BUNGIE! If we pay for this CRAP, and your "new loot system" isn't fixed yet!! And we keep getting the Same Frigging DROPS WE KEEP GETTING.
That will cause a major, MAJOR backlash in this community like you have never seen.
So... Microtransactions?... eh, it's all up to the user to me. It's their money not mine. But, for MY MONEY, they better fix the loot system first. Devils advocate... maybe that's been the plan the whole time??
EDIT: someone pointed out Luke Smith said this won't happen in a recent tweet (not 2013): links found here: http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=181613460 and here: https://mobile.twitter.com/thislukesmith/status/654213224007503872
I'll buy it for now (pun intended). But I still think they will end up going this way sooner or later. With Activision holding the strings... that's where I see things going.
