They just sold us a new expansion pack. Where has all that money gone?

That's not how it works. Bungie/Activision would have invested in time and resource to make the expansion. They're getting the money back from the sales of their efforts. If they make money (which they probably will), it helps fund the next expansion and so forth. Think about it.
