Good afternoon everyone! With the recent release of Elite: Dangerous, I would like to take some time to help answer some questions for fledgling Commanders or curious individuals.
Elite: Dangerous offers players a unique experience in a space sim by offering many different avenues to enjoy the Galaxy. There is a deep lore to the game that spreads back over a multidecade long legacy.
The goal of the game is to make your way in the galaxy in whichever ship you prefer. Some ships cost more than other and some have special requirements to acquire them; it's up to you to figure out how you will acquire your prize, nothing is handed to you.
There is a dedicated arena/pvp mode for those who wish to immerse themselves heavily in the technical combat system.
There is a solo mode for a more casual/easy time away from greifers and general jerks. The solo mode takes place in the exact same place that open play does so your solo decisions can still affect the open world. It's usually here that you will discover how to play with specific styles of ships and learning how to make an effective build for whichever task you're after, be it trading, bounty hunting, mercenary work, exploring, etc.
The last game mode is Open Play. Open Play is an open server, similar to EvE in that there are players and NPCs within the server that can interact with you in a few different ways, including trying to blow you out of the sky! In Open Play, you can form Wings (squads) with other players to help you with combat, increase/share trading and exploration profits, or just have a buddy with you to travel the open black.
The game is built on a 1:1 scale of our Milky Way Galaxy with popular and named stars having been included in the game. There are realistic physics (so no antigrav) in all aspects of the game.
Frontier has a roadmap of planned updates for the game that include multicrewed ships, planetary landings, alien invasion, and more. They are very active with their community and ask for little more than participation from their players.
If you have any questions, contact me via PM or apply to join the official Bungie.net Elite: Dangerous community, ED Archive. Our group is composed of newbies and hardened vets eager to welcome new members. See you among the stars.

Elite dangerous is a game with more grinding than destiny, so due to lack of friends, I started a group so I can play with a ton of people I don't really know.
From one of the Admins:
We are E:D Archive also known as the Covenant of Helios. A group of like minded players of E:D ranging from casual newbies to hardcore players. A mix of xbox and pc players, we are explorers, bounty hunters, and traders. Refusing to hunt our fellow players(unless wanted of course), 27 Kappa Persei is our home in game.
Joined. I haven't gotten the game yet but I've been intrigued with it since playing the demo. I'll probably get it at some point.
