I use that same method, I would say my drop rate is slightly higher.
I see about 1 exotic every 5 coins unless I'm horrendously unlucky. I use them on heroic strikes.
If I'm lucky (I have been this week!), I get 2-3 every 10 coins.
Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

I use the same method but dont wait 15 minutes just like 5 and then activate at boss. I probably get on average 1 every 3-4! Again just thought i'd put my bit in :D
