On the Subject of "Time-Gating"

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Bungie on The Taken King. I have had incredible fun playing through this expansion. There is quite a lot more content than I expected there to be, and with the Destiny 2.0 overhaul, the expansion feels fresh and new. Now, I want to clarify that I am not complaining. I just hope that I can be heard here so that Bungie might take my thoughts into consideration when designing future content. For those of you who are not familiar with the term "time-gating", time-gating is a method of design that stops a player from acquiring an item, quest, or collectible until an intended date. This method is clearly a prevalent in TTK. There are a few different examples of this throughout the expansion using varied methods such as limiting weekly reputation gains for the gunsmith by only offering five test weapons a week. As we now know, the gunsmith is the source of many exotic weapons, most of which are unlocked through attaining a certain level of reputation. As a result, a player can only acquire these weapons at the pace intended by Bungie. Another example of time-gating would be a quest that only appears on a specific day, for instance, the Black Spindle's secret heroic sub-quest or the Sleeper Simulant mission. This also allows Bungie to control when the players can get these exotics. I do not agree with this sort of design and I can explain why. When you design a game, you have a general idea of how long you want that game to last. In the past, do to the limit of how large the program itself could be, game designers would just make games difficult (sometimes extraordinarily so) to ensure that players would get several hours of play from the limited game space. Destiny on the other hand, is a game is filled with events based on real time. Bungie uses that to set the pace of the game instead of using difficulty as an obstacle. Now, I understand that Bungie wants us to get a good amount of play from this expansion by keeping the mysteries and surprises flowing. I appreciate that. Bungie has been great to us as customers. Here's the thing though, I would rather Bungie bar a player's progress with true challenges, not just timed releases on gear. Is that not the point of a game, to be challenged? Imagine that you are very skilled at Destiny, would you rather be able to use those skills to get the content at your own pace or be forced to wait until a specific date to do a few half-hearted quests that give you the reward in less than an hour? Would it have been that much of an issue for Bungie to make the quest line itself take the intended amount of time by just being truly testing of the player's skill? I personally do not want a game that just hands me the best gear. I want to be pushed to my limit, I want to have to work with the community to overcome challenges. There should be quests that make me look for help in my clan mates, friends, and fellow community members. I'm not trying to say that this needs to happen right now, but it is the potential that I see in this game. Bungie has something unique here, and I want to see it join the pantheon of great games that it deserves to be a part of. I am grateful that a forum exists where I can share these ideas, and I hope that Bungie heeds this advice because I know that I am not the only one that desires the growth of this game. Much love to you, Bungie. Thanks for making this past year great, and I look forward to more great gameplay in the Destiny universe for many years to come.

  • YES! I fully agree, the time gating is cool because we can kinda pace it out, but I want play the game and pray I don't become last alive. Feel my heart thump in fear that that hobgoblin is about to shoot me, yell in triumph as I watch the boss fall! I felt this only in raids and how nightfall, But sadly this is too easy. Ice soloed all nightfall, the taken wars, its honestly a disappointment, the only challenge was the raid until o learned the mechanics.
