How long do I need to wait for SS quest from gun smith

I didn't get the message others seemed to get telling me to come back later. I'm wondering when I should check back with him. Also if I did not get that message am I going to be in a bad place with this quest. Thanks

Once you turn in the fusion core you have to wait until the next day to continue the quest
