Not entirely correct. They're from the pre-launch Alpha Lupi augmented reality game, and Bungie sources them from world mythology and religion. Go figure. They're called geomantic figures.

Beyond their use in the Alpha Lupi event, the only significance these symbols have in the current iteration of Destiny is aesthetic purposes and design. Right?

I am not Bungie, so I do not know. :) I would put on my spinfoil hat, but all the dead ends from SS lead me to believe it's just not worth looking that deep into something like that.
