Sadly, the most effective method is prison of elders. You get about 4-5 coins per game.

What I do is Patrols (Any Is Fine) and go around and do the Major Event things, if you kill the boss in time you will get a reward, the reward is mainly motes of light but sometimes you can get strange coins 1-3. Easy If you are a low level and cant do heroic strikes.
