I just bought taken king on 360 a week ago, my wife just bought me a xbox one. I've been playing destiny for over a year now. Can I transfer my characters? Also can I not trade my game in for an Xbox one version for a discounted price?

You'll have to buy vanilla Destiny (just the stand alone game, minus the expansions) and TTK again. Expansions 1 and 2 are part of Bungie's free upgrade deal, so you likely won't have to buy those again.

Unless something has changed Bungie allows a free upgrade of the same console family (360 to XB1 / PS3 to PS4). You just login with your xbox live account and it should allow you to download it for free.
