Micro-transactions in Destiny: The return of Tess Everis, and the addition of Silver

I AM SO CONFLICTED On one hand, Tess Everis is returning to the Tower! We missed you old gal! On the other, Tess Everis will now be selling emotes for a new currency called Silver, purchasable through the Playstation Store and XBox Live store. On one hand emotes! On the other, micro-transactions in Destiny. I for one am really sad this is the move Bungie is making. I totally understand emotes are unnecessary to the game, and that no one will ever be required to purchase these emotes to access in game content. However, they are an aspect of the game we haven't had control over previously. It's always been point, wave, dance and sit. Now, we are being given a comparative ton of emotes with the caveat that they will only be purchasable through Silver. I personally see no reason why emotes couldn't be purchasable through glimmer, or even legendary marks, other than Bungie looking for a new revenue stream. Now don't cry "BUNGIEVISION" or "BUNGIE GREED" too fast. A quote from the update today, "Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year..." Does this mean Bungie is running out of money? Do the rumors of the 10 year deal with Activision being dropped hold any water? Or is Bungie/Activision just looking for a bigger wallet? I for one have a plea for Bungie: transparency. Be honest with us Bungie. Why include micro-transactions? What motivation is there for this? Is it you? Is it Activision? Can you tell us the truth or are there legalities in place keeping you from doing so? Everyone is getting some free silver for an emote or two on the 13th of October, a week from tomorrow, when Tess and her "Eververse Trading Company" arrive to the game. In the meantime, are you disappointed, excited, or ambivalent about this addition to our beloved universe? Will you be purchasing silver and collecting all the emotes? Will you delete your silver in protest? Or will you take your couple free emotes, whichever ones strike your fancy, and continue on with the "robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year" that Bungie has promised? Let me, the other readers, and Bungie know in your responses. Eyes up, Guardians!

  • 1. As long as they are cosmetic, it is a wise thing for them to deliver. Servers and labor cost money. Besides it is time game companies learn from the success of LoL and DOTA2. They do things that even a pay to play like Destiny can learn from. 2. I will wait and see what world events and world changes this revenue stream will enable.
