Because it is extremely dissatisfying to pay 20 Moldering Shards and receive 2 back as "extra" loot. Many of my clan and friends outwith have all experienced this and agree that it is unfair and disrespectful to people's effort in the raid.
Edit: Some more thoughts on the Moldering Shard business: I do think it's a neat addition to the game, a guarantee that you won't do raids for three consecutive weeks and have nothing to show for it after you jettison Oryx in to the cosmos.
The frustration surrounding this checkpoint is as such: if we get a reward of 2 shards, we have no way of knowing if it came from killing Oryx or from paying 20 shards. If it's the latter, then it's a terrible error. If it's the former, then it's still pretty disappointing, and it recalls bad times of getting Ascendant materials from killing Atheon in VoG while others got armour and guns.
In conclusion, neither of the above outcomes are going to be desired among players who want to reap the rewards, and so I think the optimal solution is to remove Moldering Shards from the loot table for the Oryx checkpoint only.

Remove moldering shards unless you're going to make it actually drop extra loot. Getting a piece or armor is nice. Getting a piece of armor and nothing else when I have moldering shards is ridiculous

It's like the vog all over again where your busting your back to get a raid helm and reach level 30. Surprise mother -blam!-er, shards and energy.

Agree

Yeah it used up my 20 and gave me 2 back and a fusion rifle after killing oryx. LMAO

Bump. Bungie lives for trolling raid players with really bad loot drops. They love that stuff.

That's happened to me 2 nights in a row

Total crap. Just unfair. Took ages to basically lose 18 shards. Both nights
