Part 2 of my Taken King Review. the first review was on the experience left for those without the game and now it's on to the actual expansion itself and whether or not it lives up to the billing (Raid review may or may follow at some point... If I ever run the raid lol)
This was not an easy review as the Taken king not only represents such a dramatic shift in so many areas of the game, but also because it's been so polarizing amongst the community.
Over the course of recent weeks I'd lost my post history with the removal of the #bumpfortruth tag (EDIT: Just got a pm linking to this post that it's back. Thank you Coz.) and the Favorites tab has been disabled for the vague reason of "causing undo chaos".
Meanwhile, I've also been accused of working for Bungie and received a fair amount of nasty hate messages for purchasing the Taken King to do this review.
One would think it would make objectivity easier when both sides are being unreasonable in their approach, but it has actually led to this being the hardest video I've done.
To those who are anti-Bungie/Destiny at this point I would say this.
There is nothing wrong with being upset with this game and there is nothing wrong with voicing frustrations, but if we're going to tear something down, we need to be willing to offer up solutions to problems and ways to make things better. Telling Bungie they suck and walking away doesn't do anything for this game. Not only that, but when you start telling people that Bungie suck and not to buy their game on principle, you're not helping make this game better, you're actively trying to destroy it.
And to Bungie i would add; topics like the desire for in-game grouping options and the hurt over locked out content aren't going away, but the fact that people are still posting despite their hurt shows they still care about this game. Can we as a community be better? Yes, we undoubtedly can, but if you want some quarter from us, at some point you need to show that you're willing to answer the tough questions now and again and you need to stop dictating and start interacting and learning what we feel about your game.
Without trust and communication, we’ll have nothing but a world devoid of emotional attachment and I don’t think any of us want that.
Thank you.

all these people who hate on the game have private accounts where nobody can see their activity. all these people say they were gifted the game. and for those that have stood their ground, good job. you've successfully completed nothing. you're a rain drop evaporating from the ocean. yet you still browse these forums mindlessly bashing a game you hate. coward two-faced weak get off the forums or get off sols back. you're clearly just as -blam!-ed up as you claim he is. time to notice it.
-
F ucking ridiculous that people are so quick to shit on one of our most powerful voices for change simply because he's not so blind to admit he likes the changes made in the TTK. TTK is a major improvement to this game. Like Sols, I fully support and understand people choosing not to give Bungie one more cent. But, automatically discounting and disrespecting folks who choose to play and review the expansion in the hopes the game continues to improve, seems petty and myopic. These aren't strike lines we're busting. Lighten up.

Great review!!!
-
Great review!! Good job on the vid too. There's definitely a split (or fissure haha) between the love/hate for BungieVision and the actual game. Speaking strictly game and gameplay-wise pre-TTK it was easier to hold Destiny and the devs/pubs at the same level - pretty garbage. Post TTK the game has become sufficiently better to actually be considered a "complete" experience but Activisions (and by extension Bungies) business ethics have kept them, if not plunged them deeper, into the garbage ranks. So now it's not as easy to be disappointed in both things equally. I think this is why so many find themselves in a strange dichotomy unsure where to place allegiance. The game is ok-ish now but we still hate the Mr. Hyde Bungie has become, so where do we complain!?! Haha Anyway, my two cents. I'm enjoying TTK more than the other Destiny pieces hands down (although I miss my Dinklebot).
-
Great review. I don't get why some people think you can't like something while being critical about it. If you look at my characters you will see I'm enjoying myself immensely. Is TTK great? Absolutely. Does it have some issues. Yes. The whole no social features ingame is killer seeing how teamwork is increased in TTK. The only part that I will semi-disagree is the gear/feeling more powerful. Once i got to endgame level I felt like a god lol. Those 38 lvl enemies that I was scared of? NOT ANYMORE WHEN I CAN -blam!- THEM UP WITH MY TELSTO. The blue gear was crappy reskins but you know , there blue gear probably wasn't going keep them( some people do I think). I love the the new weapons and gear they feel uninque and powerful same for the new subclases. Plus the new light system feels much better and accesible, the more you play the more you level. Other than that I think you and bungie nailed it. On a another note these comments below is the reason I stop going into the forums. At first it was a group of passionate players giving suggestions to make this game better(and would you look at that, it did lol) but now its just a hate filled/conspiracy theorists mob. Do you really think sols is getting paid by bungie? Are you serious!?!
-
Bump. Great video. They get better each time. I really like your choices in the music. It's never overbearing and sets a good tone. The lack of in game social features is still a problem. I'd love to see your suggestions for the gears lobby system be implemented. Please keep pushing for that.
and if you haven't found it yet there's a quicker way to get to the scent chest. ;)
Edited by Lizard King: 10/2/2015 5:29:51 AMLOL at Souls , How much did you take as advertisement money from Bungie ? As clearly you are on the path of becoming a huge Desticle with using extremely well planned but idiotic messages. You are not trying to give a fair review , all you are trying to do is increase your own fame.
Telling Bungie they suck and walking away doesn't do anything for this game.
Thing you are missing Sols , none of us are getting paid to post like you ( and we don't want to be paid ) , thats why you totally have no right to voice your opinion on Destiny anymore. As you are just a paid soldier like majority of Destiny youtubers... All we care is at this stage , give us the advertised game last couple years then we'll cut complaining ? Fair deal ?

I think the best way to sum up the situation is to just say that the game is decent most of the time and brilliant when it clicks but is severely limited by having a souless/tone deaf company behind it that isn't shy about screwing their customers if they feel they can squeeze a few extra bucks. I don't think any of us in the forum would like to see the game fail but a lot of us would like to see the company fail and that is (To me at least) the root of the problem. People can't separate the game from the company (Since Bungie has no other games ATM) so anything done badly on one inevitably reflects poorly on the other and we get fanboys riled up because they fear the game becoming something they don't like. Solutions to the problem? Sure! I love providing solutions... Company wise: (In order of importance) 1. Have Deej and Cosmo actually engage with the community (That means being prepared to handle tough questions and having the company backing them up with actual answer) It may sound simple enough but up to now all Deej and Cosmo have done is being mouthpieces for Bungie only when its convenient. I don't think they actually had any company support behind them to provide answers to questions up to this point and it puts them in a position more similar of a wall or shield to insulate the developers than Community Managers that actually foster two way communication between us and them. 2. Be more willing to relinquish control: This means they should relax the micromanagement of our play-styles. Its a friction point that the game doesn't need. The game often feels stiff and awkward every time the players run up to your play time caps and thinly veiled restrictions. This needs to stop or be tempered significantly. 3. Be honest with your customers, if you are struggling to come up with variety, let us know. If you plan on switching to paid subscription please let us know. If you are going to lock stuff out please provide an alternative its shows that the company cares and generates sales from skeptics like me. Game wise: (Again in order of importance) 1. Variety is the spice of life, think beyond the box of well worn activities we already love and hate to repeat if you struggle with ideas Crowd-source them with us. We in the forums could switch from heaping criticism to flooding you with cool ideas for content at the drop of a hat if you actually treats us like a community and engage us beyond just advertising any new DLC all you have to do is ask. 2. Progress, It takes time and it annoys people to lose it whenever you implement changes. Respect that and design to expand our progress not to replace it or reset it. 3. Difficulty: (you should be adding more difficulty options not removing them) People already repeat stuff in this game give them more customization options to ramp up the challenge (And offer notably better loot with each bump in difficulty) It will keep most of us happy and challenged and more importantly interested until you cook up your next DLC. 4. Matchmaking: Stop thinking negatively of it. Make it optional and let the players sort themselves out its a tool and giving more tools to us players can only broaden our options. Will there be trolls? Of course but the players can sort that out by themselves. I know I deviated from the main point of the thread but as someone who skipped TTK I kinda had to. (Sorry about that, I tend to get long-winded when bored)

Boring video and awful music

Well let's see where we'll begin. "There is nothing wrong with being upset with this game and there is nothing wrong with voicing frustrations, but if we're going to tear something down, we need to be willing to offer up solutions to problems and ways to make things better. Telling Bungie they suck and walking away doesn't do anything for this game. Not only that, but when you start telling people that Bungie suck and not to buy their game on principle, you're not helping make this game better, you're actively trying to destroy it." Now let me drop this line from a Bon Jovi song on you. "You say you've cried a thousand rivers and now you're swiming for the shore." Well people have been giving thousands of suggestions since this game was first released, much like the tears in the song and many are finally saying enough is enough, Bungie just continues to do what the hell they feel like doing despite numerous attempts by fans to provide constructive ideas. It also doesn't help when Bungie continues to let Luke Smith run off at the mouth and basically insult the thousands and thousands of people who bought this game from day one everytime a reporter sits down with him. As for you, please spare us the innocent act. There are many people on this forum who supported you and went to bat for you when you got banned. You were their voice and you relished that role, only to stab them in the back. So if you aren't getting as much love as you once did, the only person to blame is yourself.
-
I'm still not buying it. I'm done with grinding games. Every game is a grind for some gear that is almost always becomes pointless to the user. I miss the days when the reward was hidden behind S+ ranks (made this rating up) and you were rewarded for your skill. I pumped so many hours into this big waste of time. But if you all enjoy it, that's on you guys and I hope you enjoy. :) I really do, and I'm glad others are enjoying it, but this grind genre is gone from my life. As to why I'm on the forums, I enjoy watching people fight over stupid things that shouldn't even matter.
-
My review is ttk is terrible, rng is still broken and it feels like more of a hamster wheel then ever, so yeah, game sucks and fúck you bungie, I truly hope you go bankrupt for the way you have treated this community.
-
Bump. And respects for another great video I have to respectfully disagree on some parts of the new weapons not being as fun or powerful as Y1 weapons. While true you do end up cycling thru weapons, infusing them to make them stronger only to switch out to another weapon that has better stats or perk rolls then repeating the infusing process only to rinse and repeat, I'm not that put out by it. It reminds me of Elder Scrolls and other RPG's which have you doing the same thing until you finally come to rest on your ideal load out. For instance my Suros AR-45 with its perks and stats acquired from the gunsmith is in my opinion is a worthy successor to my beloved Shadow Price. Also the exotic Zhalo Supercell is a grand weapon that is more than sufficient as a replacement for another of my favorite go to weapons, the Hardlight. The fact that I am grinding to find the weapons that I can use to infuse the above examples to get them to their full potential, highlights the replay ability of TTK over previous offerings. The same is true for gear as well. By the way I love the Swords. What a great heavy weapon addition. Except in boss fights where melee distance is not where you want to find yourself. I agree though with your comments about some form of matchmaking in whatever form. I'm locked out of certain quest do to the fact that I simply do not have the time to search up a team. Court of Oryx is one example.

Edited by TruthHurts: 10/2/2015 11:00:36 PMF**k Bungievision. Rather let it burn than be a fake hypocrite and back pedal like you. At least malphisto won't take money from Bungievision to ride them.

Edited by WoundedBdgr0317: 10/2/2015 7:14:10 AMGreat review, regardless of those who clearly did not watch the video as I just did to see you did have some of the same problems that they are stating on here below. SMH you can't reach everyone. At any rate, it takes a mature and not so thoughtless person to see both sides and then make an informed decision on anything in life, and actually paying attention to your review and using some brain cells during viewing, you can clearly see, where words might fail in a situation, there is still more disheartening and dissatisfying then has been for the good. Not that it's a good thing, but you clearly point this out fairly. I read some of the below posts before watching the review to have some information both for and against going into it. It is clear who did or did not watch it with an open mind and no bias or malice going into it, if they even watched it. It then occurred to me as I saw the footage at the end (pleasant surprise and made me laugh) or finally noticed it was from our first meet and time playing together that those same irrational people will put me in the same bracket as they say you are, being paid etc......... To this, well, I don't really care what others think about me. When people make it clear that they just want to hate and not move forward in a positive manner and try to see all sides and perhaps find a gate, they are only robbing themselves of the many experiences and knowledge to be gained in life. You can be for "and" against something, sadly though it appears society is trying to force the opposite, and too many ignorant, irrational, and just all around bad people think otherwise. I refer to a guy yesterday on the forums who thought to tell me that its alright to troll people because it's more fun rather than help them. Really? Anyway, it was a great review. I took from the opening in the video not "look how awesome this game is!" But that the awoken ships represented year one players and players in general, with the dreadnaught being Bungie and Activision. The fight being all the push to change the game, the battling back and forth to make the game better, and then all the work and effort (the fight) being wrought to nothing with complete uncertainty after the dreadnought fired its weapon, just as when TTK launched scrubbing mostly all we worked for, and leaving derelict all the players both who purchased and did not TTK, with only the game hanging in the balance. I believe this is what it was supposed to mean, and for those who missed that message, you can only see things like this with an open mind, hate clouds your view worse than that asteroid ring around Saturn. If I am wrong then I am wrong, but I saw something further ahead and not filled with hate nor anything to suggest Sols works for Bungie in the short time I have spoken and known him. Perhaps future videos or podcast, etc., might bring to light things others aren't seeing. Old Badger,
-
Bro you are weak for buying ttk You obviously desire the feedback on these forums so bad that you're scared to become irrelevant. Terrible.... At least there are still a few of us who won't give into these atrocities.
-
As far as the video is concerned...they do keep getting better. I actually thank you for the video cause I feel like I got to play ttk and I don't like what I see (but I didn't waste my money on it neither)...reskinned, shiny enemies...same ol maps done hundreds of times over and a more confusing system for weapon progression...I think it highlights bungies lack of vision and direction. Repost: just in case it got lost or ya missed it... I disagree on the point of telling bungie they suck without offering a solution. Bungie is not what they used to be without Joe Staten and the MANY designers that were there during the halo days. There is no trust because they have demonstrated THEY can NOT be trusted time and time again. I have to go to work more to come... Edit: finished with work, ok now... Bungie has shown that they, on MANY occasions, they either ignore A LOT of good ideas from many people like Malphisto, a whole bunch of others and even YOU, whom have had outstanding ideas or that they are either incompetent or just unable to implement those ideas. Innovative rather than planned obsolescence or extortion/ponzi scheme/pay wall tactics Right!? https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/157307267/0/0 But yet they can make purple balls glow at the tower and patch loot caves and fix "issues" with posts going missing REAL quick, sometimes within the same day! But yet the BIG issues go unnoticed or not even acknowledged! Issues like dedicated servers and fixing obvious lag with pvp and even pve. Optional matchmaking...don't get me started...upgradeable year 1 gear. Vault space. The loot system. REMOVAL of content for non ttk buyers. Many more issues still. But I just listed the big ones. And through all of this, what has been bungies approach to the issues they have fixed? 1 step forward and 2 steps back. And I'm not talking about Paula Abduls song neither. For every fix they create more issues, like with the increase in vault space. It was nice and should have been implemented since launch...but was instantly nullified with all the gear they made obsolete with ttk. Then again what do they care when they got our money? Previous currencies nullified with the next dlc. What do they care when they got our money? An obvious beta game for $60 to $100 was sold to us but yet they talk of potential with ttk, when it is WAY PAST the potential part. Day 1 should have been the proof! But what do they care when they have our money? HOW was bought by many just before ttk. And now all of HOW, Crota and VOG is pointless. Almost all the exotics we have now...some of them just recently found...less powerful than any green or blue weapon in ttk! But what do they care, they have our money? Bungie has shown to us that as long as we continue to give them money, they can make any changes they want regardless if we asked for it or not, why? Because we agreed to their terms when we gave them more money. So...it's fairly obvious that no matter how many great ideas are presented to bungie...no matter how many fixes are brought to their attention...they simply don't care because they know that a lot of people are going to throw money at the screen. They have shown their intentions through their actions and in most cases, inaction! The ONLY thing that WILL motivate bungie and activision to change for the better and learn how to treat their customers is a BOYCOTT. I simply refuse to pay $100 for a beta game and then tell them how to make said game better. I refuse to pay them to do THEIR job! Why should we have to pay to help make a game that SHOULD have been made ALREADY? We didn't have to pay to help make Halo or Halo 2 did we? And why should we pay to only have the rug pulled from under our feet with every "update" or dlc? So...until bungie and activision learn how to treat their customers and fix the big issues with the game I will certainly not give them more money...I will instead... BOYCOTT BUNGIE AND ACTIVISION

Edited by Gunship: 10/2/2015 8:03:22 AMBUNGLE has lied at every turn. They are actively working to turn Gaming into a paywall infested Corporate profit machine and turn games into grind fest nonsence. Don't buy TTK (I did and trust me it's a waste of money) Don't buy anything BUNGLE makes untill they start acting in the best interest of the PLAYERS.

Edited by PEARLMEISTERR: 10/2/2015 10:35:47 AMI am a little lost here with what you are saying Lost Sols, in the past you were an avid campaigner against the way ActiBungieVision were treating their fanbase. You would openly shout about the lack of story the cut content and the paywalls you even promoted the #bumpforthetruth and the boycott the game day. But now as someone who only comes onto the forums to see how the revolution is going and as someone who did end up quitting a game that i personally feel is not worth the £140 pounds they are asking, it does look as though you have sold out to Bungie. To even try to promote anything new they release for this game and totally forget what they have done in the past and are still doing now with the cut content and paywall is wrong just wrong and does come across to all the gamers out there who did not for whatever reasons have the money to expand this game as a sellout. As i have said no matter what your reasons are for not buying DLC you should still be able to play the game as it was originally sold to you with all your raids, gear, strikes, and weapons all still intact at the level you are. DLC should add new content for them who want to pay for it and expand their games it should not remove or reduce content for those who do not who still payed whatever they could afford for this game. Also Bungie are still using their old tactics of ignoring anything on this issue so that also has me lost as to how you could even think about defending them as they are blatantly ignoring the communities upset and pleas for this issue to be resolved. This is another of their tactics used in the past with this game which in itself is an admittance to guilt. Here is how i see it with Destiny and the reason i no longer play the game, say you buy a new car from Ford its your dream car you love driving it. Then Ford say we have an engine upgrade for you and its going to be great the car will perform better and run faster. But your happy with your car just as it is, it does exactly what you want and has all the perks you wanted and paid for. Now that engine upgrade is implemented even though you don't want it and to make sure you don't use it they lock you out of any content that might use it and also remove your wheels and steering wheel making the car you loved just a metal shell with seats sat in your drive. Even you Lost Sols must admit that if that happened you would kick up holy hell and make sure that everyone you know or anyone who is tempted to buy that product are warned of these downright disgraceful tactics to force you into buying more content. And more so you would not cave in no matter what your reasons and buy anything else from them and then try to promote it to all those shit on and hurt people. I use to love your posts Lost Sols but im afraid that i cannot and will not like anything that promotes this game ever again until Bungie repair the damage they have done to this community. Do not take this at a dig at you Lost Sols but as it is intended a dig at Bungie and Activision, BOYCOTT BUNGIE AND ACTIVISION
Bungie suck and not to buy their game on principle, you're not helping make this game better, you're actively trying to destroy it.
I didn't buy "The Taken King on Principle" what they have done is a industry first, it's shady, and morally unjust. They had months and months to explain what they had planned to gamer's, yet they chose to omit it due to the bad press they would receive. Now do I want to see Destiny or Bungie fail?...NO!... Do I want to see them be more forthcoming, and honest? ...YES! When I chose not to purchase "ttk" I understood it's just a drop in the ocean, but I felt good about myself for doing it. as "money talks". I feel like people have been giving Bungie some excellent suggestions, and solutions for months and months now. We keep hearing "We're listening" yet we gamers, never hear any feedback from Bungie, or they seem to have very selective hearing. Communication needs to go both ways. For me the biggest issue with Bungie is "Trust" and that Trust has been broken with the many stunts Bungie has pulled over the last year. Once that trust has been broken with any person, or company etc. It's very difficult to not view them or their actions slightly cynically. Now that being said... there is a 3rd position, and that's "on the fence" that's where I feel that I am. If I start seeing some positive changes with Bungie, I may hop over and buy their next product, but at the same time if I keep seeing nothing but negative changes... I may hop completely over to the other side and walk away from them forever.

Where is my solution to awarding me 10 level 40 weapons for completing crucible, vanguard and fraction ranks when I haven't purchased ttk, where are the weapons and armour I should be getting as a non ttk owner, where is the solution to undownloading forced downloads on a game I was nowhere near finished on, they aren't interested in solving any problems that they intentionally handcrafted to be a problem, where's my solution to not getting trampled on by level 40's in the crucible that you can't go head to head with, they handcrafted it so the only solution to make the game playable was to purchase. I only just started playing this game a month or so ago and they took my money for that wolf download even after they had forced those downloads to make it unplayable. I have voiced my annoyance over this many times, do they care? no, they handcrafted the problem so the only solution you have is to buy the download or as it stands purchase the whole thing here in Australia, most of which I have already paid for, so no I don't want to actively incourage this sort of thing in gaming by purchasing
