105 Quests that aren't actually related to the main story and that focus around performing menial tasks and challenges that are equivalent to like, say, the Riddler Challenges from Batman Arkham Knight. Do they extend gameplay? Yes. But they are ultimately pointless in the long run and just there to keep you playing longer and make it easier to justify grinding again after your first year of effort was rendered totally pointless.

Turns out to be only 85. But how is the taken war quest line not relevant to the main story?
-
You mean outside of the fact that you technically killed Oryx on the Dreadnought and yet the Taken are still apparently keeping up their conquest despite that, along with an "Echo of Oryx" which is given no actual explanation or even any real reaction to by the Vanguard? Nevermind that those same quests yet again stretch out the Year 1 content by having you replay through old areas. I did the Taken War Questline, it was short, repetitive and just a giant pain in the ass that only served the purpose of providing you with an extra challenge. Like I said, its comparable to the Riddler Challenges from Arkham Knight but that aren't really important to the main story. At best, you could say they count as Side Quests which is what the majority of the quests are, but they are handled in such a way that, for me and others, failed to draw us in and actually make us WANT to do them. And even then, the Taken War itself took like 2 hours playing it solo. If I would've had help with it I'm sure that would have amounted to a much shorter time.
-
I don't think we are playing the same game. Cause it took well more than 2 hours to finish solo for me. And all of that leading up to the final encounter on phobos that then gives a quest to defeat all the raid bosses. But what do I know? Maybe I'm just blinded by all the new "content".

I think its more just the novelty effect of it being new. I mean think about it, we already know Destiny is greatly designed around Human Behavior Manipulation techniques. The game up to this point didn't really set the bar too high for itself as is, so when TTK came out and people began playing it, of course by simple comparison you're going to get blown away by it. It seems like a lot, but its really not. Those quests are just there to stretch out all the previous content, though for the "new players" who are just coming into Destiny with the Legendary Edition, they are going to be the ones who benefit the most from it. That is until come Year 3 when everything they are doing and all the gear they are collecting is once again reset and made obsolete.

"The shtick of Destiny" What is the shtick of Destiny? It's about stuff. Getting new stuff and leveling that stuff up and then getting more stuff and leveling that stuff up. Am I right? Call it the grind or the hamster wheel or whatever. But new content means new stuff. And so I must pursue the acquisition of exotic weapons and armor. Because only then will I be ready? Ready for what? I don't know. The worm gods haven't told me. It's why I play in the court of Oryx. To get stuff, so that I can infuse other stuff, so I can be ready. On a side note, I was playing rift last week and got awarded a house of wolves weapon with year 2 stats and infusion. The NL Shadow 701X. So it's possible that year 1 weapons are going to be slowly introduced into year 2. If you want, go look at my warlock. I'll have it equipped.
-
Only problem there being that you'd essentially be farming all over again to get those same weapons that you already have. Its just too big of a thing to forgive. Especially when all the signs point to it being a repeat trend every year with the game. Or every DLC, even, like the Dark Below reincarnate.
-
Remember now, they don't want your forgiveness. They just want you to play.

Then the whole game is pointless and so are others. Battlefield, cod, whatever. Wow. New game or expansion or game comes out, all those levels, unlocks, gear etc is pointless. Even if it's a one off game, when you stop playing, all the time and effort you put in is worth nothing. Value is derived from the enjoyment of the experience, if you don't enjoy it then don't play. If you want to do something meaningful, get a job, buy a house, start a family grow old and happy. Die... oh wait, I guess that makes it all pointless. Haha

Yes, those games you mentioned are rather pointless. Do you know why I have a Gaming Library? Do you know why its called a library? Because games are a medium, and they all serve a built-in purpose. I find games that present a progression system, but then invalidate their own progression to be the pinnacle of human ignorance. A prime example of this was Generations on Titanfall. You spend all the time ranking yourself up, unlocking everything, only to then hit the reset button and start over from scratch. All for the sake of getting a new tag? Its the Call of Duty prestige nonsense, and its a mentality which Activision has fostered over the years. If Destiny were an RPG, it would be thrown in the garbage for having such a horrible story. If Destiny were an MMO, it would be compared to all other games in the genre and be found sorely lacking in all respects. Destiny is an FPS, above all else, which takes elements from other genres to expand itself, and yet it doesn't actually capitalize on any of that. In the sense that this game is an FPS, though? It has a workable multiplayer. That's it. The PvE is meanwhile sculptured around a tireless grind in which you aren't actually working towards anything. Your goal in the PvE is to build yourself up so that you can get bored of it and then waste the rest of your life repeating the same thing over and over again until the next piece of paid DLC hits which you will then be expected to buy. Honestly, with how much this game has cost already, would have MUCH rather they just make Destiny 2 instead of continuing to prolong this ridiculous Beta Test that is now going into its second year.

I think you miss my point, which is that everything at the end of the day is pointless in terms of progression. Even life. The value is found in the time and enjoyment you get out of it, not what you have accomplished at the end of it. Because in essence all you really gain from a game is a few pounds, a slight vitamin d deficiency and the enjoyment you got from it while playing. In regards to the type of game, I think Destiny has a bit of an identity crisis. You say it's an FPS first and foremost but frankly I think it has far more in common with something like WoW than cod. The only FPS aspect is the format, virtually everything else is different than the other FPS competitors it has. I know they don't like to call it that but I think it's about time people accept it for what it is

No, that is the delusion. That is the dream you, myself and others wish were a reality. Destiny is not an MMO, in any sense. It pretends to be something it isn't. What you love is the potential of what it "could" be, but in all seriousness most likely never will achieve because... 1: Activision constantly meddling in its affairs. 2: Bungie for being unable to do what other developers have been successful with. 3: The community not being heavy handed enough to enforce changes. You can't tell a dog who just pissed all over your game that was left sitting out of its case on the floor "bad boy" while still giving it a doggy treat and a pat on the head for a reward. Even if Bungie wanted to do things that people want, Activision tells them no. Bungie looks to the community for enough negative feedback that can be used as ammo against the publisher to get them to back off and regain control, but then Activision see their profits and say "eh, who cares?" Bungie concedes, give up hope and turn into a mindless machine putting out whatever is next on the "schedule" for release. Community bitches about stuff, Bungie silently curses them out as their bosses tell the developers to shut up and get back to work. Harold Ryan proceeds to count his fat Christmas Bonus cause you just KNOW the Team Leads and big hunchos for Bungie are making bank. Furthermore, time played doesn't automatically equate to time well spent if your hard work was all for nothing. The problem is the difference of value. All the things that were "lost" that have spurred such an uproar obviously don't mean that much to you. So as far as you are concerned? No big deal. Does that mean everyone is the same as you? No, of course not. There's plenty of posts and comments on this forum that prove such. Fact of the matter is that people feel cheated because all of their hard work was invalidated. They weren't playing the game JUST to for the sake of wasting their time. Which brings me to your bit. You could argue that life is a waste of time because everyone eventually dies. If that were in fact true, then go ahead and light the nukes and get this party started. However, the fact of the matter is that this is not true. Humans are sentient lifeforms who are capable of understanding self worth and the value of a finite lifespan. Because of this, TIME is actually a very precious thing to most, especially once you hit a certain age for most folks. Sure its "alright" to goof around sometimes, but for the most part people want to be working towards a goal in what they are doing. The same is true for games. Now, those goals are generally different for everyone, but the truth of the matter is EVERYONE HAS A REASON. Its an absolute truth, a constant for all existence. Everything which exists has a purpose or needs a driving force behind it. If you lack drive/desire, then you are no different than a lifeless shell. In this case, as far we're concerned with Destiny, that goal has been the acquisition of weapons and armor all throughout Year 1. And it continues to be the center focus of the game in Year 2 with TTK. However, with Year 1 being made obsolete and "frozen in time" according to DeeJ, ALL OF THE PAST YEAR OF WORK AND TIME HAS BEEN TOTALLY WASTED. And because this is still a trend going into the next year, we can expect to see this happening again for Year 3 and so on. There is no longer a reason to grind. There is no longer a reason to hunt for gear. You get what you get and you're either happy with it or you're not. Will you repeat King's Fall 100 times JUST to get an arsenal of Raid Weapons and Armor so that come Year 3 you can use that same gear to replay King's Fall 200 times more? How about 300 times? 400? How many people do you think played Vault of Glass getting those weapons thinking they were going to be useful for more than just one year? How many people do you think wouldn't have spent nearly as much time playing as they did if they had known ahead of time that they were going to do this? Better question, if you had instant access to ALL the new weapons and armor, how many times would you replay this content? My answer? One and Done.
