EDIT: Ok I thought of an idea to solve the problem! Let me know what you think. Bungie could set it so that you keep the Light Level you gain from the highest defence class item you have ever equipped. So the Light Levels (not defence, just the Light that the defence gives you) I get from my current Cloak will still be there when I put on a 30 defence Cloak, but once I find a new highest defence Cloak, I have to put it on once to get the levels, until I get an even better one again. Thoughts?
So many people have a favorite Cloak, or Bond, or Mark. When TTK came out, people quickly realized that they are being forced to use one specific class item all the time, because of the stat restriction. I'm being forced to use my Gunslinger Cloak (Mind you I'm obsessed with it), but I would MUCH rather be using my original FWC Astrolord Cloak. Bungie claimed to have removed the need to use Faction Class items to get rep so that you could use whatever you want all the time. It ended up restricting you to one or two class items because without them, you don't meet the light level restriction to do raids/strikes/anything, or even damage enemies. I'm posting this in the hopes of Bungie seeing this (I know you lurk on the forums, DeeJ...) so that they are aware that many of us are bummed about this situation. Honestly, I kinda wanted class items to actually do something, but after experiencing it, I have changed my mind. Class Items should stay aesthetic. Or at the least, just remove the Armour rating and let us have some neat perks as a bonus to looking awesome.
One last thing before I hit post: Shaders. I have noticed that none of TTK class items change with shaders (for Hunters at least, I don't use other classes yet). I have a few rares that I like the design of, but can't use because they are all a pale blue that doesn't match any shader that I like/have. I liked the old system where only most Legendary Cloaks didn't change colour.
So far though, I don't really have any concerns other than these two points though. Overall, good job Bungie! But maybe make a few tweaks to the class items to give us some more freedom.

Infuse the one you like. Aside from the exotic faction pieces, class items do not provide unique benefits. 1) farm blue engrams. Infuse fav item to as close to 300 as you can get. 2) infuse fav item with 310 raid class item. 3) profit.

YYYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeeeesssssssss I miss my hunter scarf I hate capes, I also liked my warlock Devils bond my titans mark was more of a meh
-
Maybe not take it away, but give us the option to infuse into ALL types of class items no matter the year/rarity

Edited by SYKEVANDAL: 10/3/2015 12:22:30 AMSo, let me get this straight,...because you half-tards want to use a specific piece of gear to make your character look pretty, everyone else's gear should lose its defense value to accommodate your keen sense of fashion? Do I understand your problem correctly? Seriously, and I mean this exactly as it sounds,...suck it up princess.

I like the armor stat and think it should stay, just add ability to infuse year one items.
-
Love my crucible cloaks. Would wear them if their defense wasn't that of reinforced tissue paper.
-
Die slowly
-
-
Im fine with strength, discipline, and intellect being there along with the skill tree, but a defense rating is a little ridiculous
-
Got my dead orbit cloak up to 302. Im good. Gonna try to bang it out to 310 after reset
-
-
Please remove it. I hate how they fix one problem but add another

I knew that armor stats, perks, or other functionality on class items was a bad idea the instant I heard it. Foolishly, I assumed Bungle would know better. For all the people saying "infuse legendaries", that would help, but many of my favorite class items are blue, green, or even white tier. Lots of people like their makeshift scarves. I like my Titan's waistband.

signed. I want my damn scarf back.
-
Agree. I want to use my ghost angel cloak
-
Wouldnt it make sense to simply ascend all year one class items instead? That would introduce even more rebalancing which I guarantee would lead to additional issues. Doesn't seem like you are thinking it all the way trough. Wish they followed through on that promise before the ttk dropped but it seems a mute point now unfortunately. Bungie does bot seem to ever think anything through consistently though so that is a plus.

Or... At least add infusion to y1 legendary class items. I seriously wouldn't mind a no stat/perk AOS#CRYPTID at 300 def.
-
Add in transmog! It will make everyone happy
-
Signed infinite times. I want my beast ass cloaks!

I know that not many old class items changed colours with your shaders either. My advice if you can't find one that matches is to either choose an all white or all black one. Nothing matched that awful green of the neat feathery big cloak but the all black was close enough. Same with the Taniks cloak, all black suited perfectly. With infusion we can make any legendary cloak at the highest armour rating we want, so aside from year one cloaks not being in year two that part doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I'm all for more colour changing class items though. I just want more really haha.

The VOG cloak is by far my favorite one. I used it 80% of the time. Now I'm stuck with a neon blue and green one, or some brown ones with leaves on them.... How long do I have to wear this stupid shit? This is why leaving everything in year 1 behind is a terrible idea. Also the class items from the speaker are the exact same thing, except mine are now worthless? That's a total dbag move! If a gun, armor, or class item from year 1, is in year 2, than we should have some way besides legendary marks, to ascend them. It's stupid. You can't just pretend like we didn't already win/earn/buy/grind for, whatever you want to call it, for these items that have been carried over into year 2. I know bungie likes to piss on year one players, but damn, it's ok if we have a handful of things that you decided to re use in year 2. It's shit like this that pisses me off and why i would never give destiny a good rating if asked by a friend.

Very much agreed; I just got back to Destiny after a long break and alot of my gear is outdated; Which I ofcourse anticipated. Luckily I CAN ascend/infuse my favorite gear to bump em up to levels I can keep using. This was great news! But when it comes to a few of my favorite cloaks I've got during the countless hours of the first year; "Strength of the pack" and "Shroud of flies", I notice that I simply can't keep using em. Or, well - I could, but it would be hindering my light ALOT Shroud of flies cloak defense rating is 140. Even every green cloak that drops is well over 200. There's nothing "legendary" about that item anymore... I mean sure, I understand it's OLD but couldn't they have bumped the defense ratings of legendary cloaks to around the same ballpark other legendaries are? Or made them upgradeable at least? I really wouldn't have been bummed out for already having a good defense rating in a cloak and not "finding anything better", as I'd most likely only want to change my cloak if something cooler comes around. To me, they're a way of customization after all, not much more. I'm a sucker for all things character customization and even though I really like the mechanic how the game guarantees progress by constantly giving you better gear, it does take away alot of customization, when you're basically always just cycling in the item with the best rating. Sure, it's a good system overall and I agree this update has made everything alot better and I no longer have the frustration that made me go on a break some time ago. (I kinda often felt like I'm not progressing based on how much time I put in - and that my progress was too heavily down to luck.) but ... yeah, like Saxifraga mentions in their comment; Transmog would be amazing.
-
I do miss my Skorri's Iron Bond... an option to infuse for year 1 class items and ghosts would be nice.
-
Hell yes. I had several blue items that looked so much better than the purps
