Good thing words like failure are just a description for an opinion. Also your biggest gripe is that the gear you earned is no long worthwhile? you seriously want to continue using all of your old exotics and weapons from year one? It has been a full year, aren't you tired of the same -blam!-ing weapons? Everyone used the same shit for a full year, a game doesn't move forward by being stuck in the past. It moves forward by changing and evolving. You have your opinions as well as everyone else. Turns out nearly everyone else doesn't view TTK as a failure but a step in the right direction. If you seriously think that they were going to fix everything that was wrong with the game then you'd be wrong. It will keep changing and they will probably replace the light system when they find something that works better as long with everything else. As for why trials is gone, if I had to put money on it, I'd say it is because they are waiting to see where the new classes and weapons stand in crucible before adding back their only competitive mode.
