Nah I don't feel bad, they're just minions set out to destroy everything to "feed" Oryx (awesome) Even the smart ones are just ranked up thrall.

True, but where would the hive be if they didn't? Would they even exist? That super wave or whatever wiped out trillions supposedly, and they didn't explicitly even say what race they were talking about. Plus the way it reads suggests Oryx's straight up created the hive. The excerpt explaining how he uses them to feed and how they rank up gave me that impression.

Nice yeah that's what I was thinking too! Then the worms ultimately created the hive I guess! These stories are hands down my favorite lore ive read so far. Just good stuff.
