I've never really reviewed a game before in the traditional sense. My reviews tend to be: Its great or it sucks. I know its long, sorry. (not really sorry)
But, after putting in a load of time into Destiny since Beta, and playing the Taken King, even though I've yet to try the new raid, I felt like writing a review to blunt some of the plethora of negative posts.
So, here goes, and be gentle, I wound easily. I'll score each section on 1-10 scale..
Story: I think the new storyline with Oryx is a 100% improvement over the disjointed original story line. Having every advisor in the tower working with you to help you and guide you has made the story more immersive than before. Those three standing in the Hall of the Guardians are now more than just bad gear vendors.
The fact there are additional story missions that open up after completing select tasks is an amazing addition that I guess I didn't see coming. And these are missions after you complete your fight against Oryx in the main story line. I love that virtually every mission gives you something worthwhile and the unbelievable increase in Engram drops makes taking your time to kill everything that moves, worth it.
And of course, we get loads and loads of Nathan Fillion, 'nuff said. Score: 10/10(mainly because of Nathan)
Gameplay: Not much has changed in overall gameplay. You shoot stuff, you find materials, etc. No complaints from me. Love the new Patrol missions available and THANK YOU for getting rid of patrol bounties and changing them to what they are now. Much improved. Edit: I forgot to add, I love some of the new mechanics of The Taken. They sometimes force you to play differently. This is a good thing. Score: 8/10
PvP: I am not a huge fan of Rift, but it’s a nice change of pace from the dull repetition of Control. Some of the new maps are brilliant with elevation changes that have a significant impact on map movement and one on one battles. Then there is Mayhem. Bungie, please bring that back very soon. AND DO NOT CHANGE ONE SINGLE ASPECT OF MAYHEM, IT IS PERFECT. I thought I would hate it, but it is soooo much fun. Score: 8/10
Raid: I've barely stuck much more than my big toes into the new raid. I've watched a few snipits from YT'ers playing through it and I've concluded this raid looks awesome and is 1000x better than Crota's End and vastly superior to Prison of Elders(just typing those three words makes me throw up in my mouth a little). Is it better than VoG? Many I've spoken to who have played Kings Fall say it is. I can't wait to dive into it this weekend. Score: 10/10(based on feedback of others)
Weapons, Gear and the beauty of Infusion: So before we launched on 9/15, I didn't really understand the point of infusion. Now its what I spend 99.9% of my legendary marks on. The new gear progression is a stroke of genius Bungie. Seriously. Getting Blue Engrams is just as good as seeing the rare Legendary Engram drop. You ALWAYS have a chance to get better gear than what you have equipped. If you follow the many guides on decoding Engrams, you can level up your light swiftly. And now being able to use that blue gear to level up a favorite Legendary item is pure genius. Having the ability to use other classes gear to infuse to a different classes gear is also genius. I've leveled up some of my Hunter's gear with junk from my Warlock that I don't need. I LOVE THAT.
Now to the weapons. Not for one second do I miss using ANY of my year 1 weapons. Not even my precious Ballerhorn. Its odd, but Bungie pulled a Jedi mind trick on us and has shown us the Ghorn isn't necessary anymore.
The new weapons have a distinct feel to them that truly distinguishes them as something different. We don't just have reskins of old weapons. I love some of the new Fusion Rifles. I love the new scopes, the new looks, EVERYTHING new is a breath of fresh air and makes me want to find and fire every single gun in the game. Firing the Hereafter produces my new favorite sound in Destiny.
Gear, yay, our Ghosts have a purpose beyond opening doors and tripping failsafe's! Get the wormspore Ghost ASAP, trust me on this. I love the fact you can choose which of your base traits you want to boost on many different gear pieces. That is a cool addition. The fact many pieces help you generate more orbs is fantastic when you need super energy.
Swords - My new favorite weapon type. When used correctly, you can wipe out major's and Ultra's quickly.
Score 10+/10.
Overall: I love the Taken King. This is the expansion we needed. It is worth the $$$. Score: 10/10(not an average).
Let me hear your thoughts on the game. I know I missed some things.

Great review! I'm tired of hearing all the B.S about sunbreaker and nightfalls. The replay ability is awesome. I just wish that some of the content was slowly revealed, as the next DLC isn't coming out for 6 months
-
It's rare for me to play a console game for over a year, but destiny got me. Now with TTK everything is fresh and new again. Ready for another year.
-
I agree i am a desticle too!
-
Clearly a desticle
-
I now can confidently say there's too much to do, haven't even got time for pvp now, you could argue that the dlc has been out only for a week but nonetheless lots of new activities.
-
Loving it as well, so happy with the way everything is now. Also I'm freaking out about the new secret mission found through the story, I'm wondering what other stuff has yet to be found.
-
I gotta agree All fanboyism aside. I agree
-
Dude. Well said. The amount of quests in my log is ridiculous.....and I'm loving every second of it!
-
The best thing about this is replayability. I like being able to load something up and running into something I haven't found yet that leads to a next thing. TTK reminds me of Skyrim in the aspect of things to do all the time. Eventually everything will be done, but its going to be a long time. I completed all of the Dark Below content and House of Wolves content within the first two weeks. I'm not expecting to be finished exploring every aspect even within the first 2 months.

Edited by Turducken: 9/22/2015 4:52:27 PMMy review of your review. : 11/10 Edit: But I think that the gameplay needs a little improvement. Just a little...
-
Nice review and i couldn't agree more.
-
Agreed. Despite my struggles to reach 260, I agree with every point!
-
Great review! I'm in the same boat. Me, being the filthy scrublord casual that I am, it's been treat to play so far. It's going to be a while before I run out of things to do with this DLC. I'm impressed, Bungie did an excellent job.

Great review. However if you ever think of doing one again then please don't add a review "score". Just leave your review as it is. Scores 95% of the time aren't a good representation of how a game is. Other than that, well done and great for a first time review. :)
