It was clearly stated in the release info that TTK would not be eligible for the digital upgrade program.

Then help me understand why multiple sources told me it would work just fine if it was indeed so clearly stated. And why Bungie didn't make it abundantly clear beforehand and why this is coming to light now after they have my money.

I don't know who your "multiple sources" were, but they were sadly misinformed.
