Completely different. Games ARE NOT SERVICES. They never have been. You confusing the two is this industry (that is failing) convincing morons that they are a service, when they're not. Games aren't a movie service. They are the movie. They're made to be sold whole.

  • As others have pointed out, you are incorrect. Games used to be sold as is, but that is no longer the case, whether we as gamers want to admit it. Games are now services, provided by the studios and publishers. Gamers can resist this, but in order to protest, you have to give up gaming. Something I'm not ready to do.

  • More accurately they are a good/product which the suppliers are pushing to be a service. As consumers we have many choices available which can include "giving up" gaming... Or finding/developing alternatives where the consumer demand-end defines what how and why they want whatever it is.

  • It's not just gaming. It's damn near every digitally available medium. You don't own shit. You are just paying for a license to temporarily access stuff.

  • True. But contextually, we are talking about gaming right now.

  • Really? Because I find it hard to believe I can buy a service for my service. Can I get a service for my service for my service too? That would be dandy. If xbl gold is a service, please explain how playing halo is a service. Its a game ON my service, which is xbl gold.

  • You are using a service to access another service. In fact, you are using a service (internet isp)to access another service (xbl/psn) which allows you to access to your game service. So yeah, really. I think reading the ToS will explain it fully for you.
You might be interested to know that at any time, Bungie or Activision can block, restrict, or cancel your access to their service. It's all in the ToS.
• Yo dawg, I heard you like services. So we made you buy a service to buy a service so you can use your service while you use your service.

  • That just scum bag business. Blocking our access to games was an overreach in developer rights due to a lack of laws with games. I'm still waiting on a pricing board to get on with esrb to stop the bullshit pricing of non content. This industry is falling apart because of it.

  • And games aren't. That's about it. Netflix, Hulu, Crackle. All services. Steam, PS+, XBL Gold. All services. Blade runner? Movie. Destiny? Game. That. -blam!-ing. Simple.

  • Once upon a time I think you were on point. In an environment where games are played online and require 24/7 monitoring and maintenance with regular updates to keep people playing you can make a fine argument that they are a service. The EULA which makes you agree to the terms of servicealso sort of imply there is a service involved as well.

  • Except..those are to keep things they own theirs. Which is fine. I understand that I don't own the game's code. I just own the right to play it. The Internet is a tool, just because every developer relies on it doesn't make it a service. They need to constantly update? Because they're over budget and need sales to justify the work needed to apply an update, or what would be polish if it hadn't released. Again. Take away the Internet, nothing has changed. The game is the same without its constant connection. Players can join with servers we CHOOSE to use, we can still have pvp. It's all the same. Just because Activision found a good way to screw you doesn't make it a service.

I meant update in terms of new content. Nobody would be playing vanilla Destiny anymore without updates. Nor the vanilla version of most any game, for that matter. Super Mario Brothers on NES did not require Nintendo to be monitoring servers 24/7. The games of today do. That's a big difference. Also, there is that whole EULA thing again, which whether you like it or not, you agreed to.
SERVICES AND TERMS OF USE: USE OF CERTAIN FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM, INCLUDING ONLINE OR MULTIPLAYER COMPONENTS, OR UPDATED FEATURES, MAY REQUIRE ASSENT TO ADDITIONAL TERMS OF SERVICE. IF YOU DO NOT ASSENT TO ADDITIONAL TERMS OF SERVICE, YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS OR USE ADDITIONAL GAME FEATURES. PLEASE REVIEW THE ADDITIONAL TERMS OF SERVICE AThttp://www.bungie.net/eula BEFORE INSTALLING OR USING THE PROGRAM.
Edit: bad quote bracket

  • You mean legal crap that's been around for ages? Seen it. Not interested. Games have had the "terms of service" for over a decade. They still aren't services. You Destiny morons will believe anything to the contrary. What's next? God exists? The twin towers really was Bush all along? Come on guys. Time to quit being hipster retards that follow trends and fail to understand legal jargon along with a proper interpretation. Done. Will not listen to this crap. You're worse than Mormons. At least they go away.

  • OK, so nevermind the EULA that stays they can change the terms and require you to make purchases to maintain full access to the game. Whether we like it or not, that's there. The crux of the conversation is whether or not a service is being provided by Bungie. You say no, Destiny is just a game. I say there are service elements in that they have to upkeep servers and provide new content. I was most interested in your thoughts on that particular concept, as I find it hard to imagine that you truly believe the level of "service" requires between Mario and Destiny is the same.

  • It becomes a service when it's continuously updated and upgraded. If you don't want games that evolve, there are plenty of those out there.

  • You mean that game? Yeah, I have. Its a subscription to play the game to cash in on idiots. Theres a reason that model doesn't make a game a service. Because without it the game still functions. Remove the pay to play. Does the game play the same? Identical. Making you pay more to play a game isn't a service, it's a butt -blam!-ing you take because you're addicted to a game. If I sold lemonade by the cup, but charged you for entering my store, am I service? No, I'm just a dick at that point, who clearly over values his lemonade. Pay to play models are put in place with games that are built to be addictive. That doesn't make them services.

  • Sorry you're making silly points that don't matter. The game was designed as a shooter with mmo aspects, one aspect of mmos, is that old content shuffles off when new stuff is patched in. Bungie saw an opportunity to combine the retail price point of a console game, with the sustained income potential of an mmo, if you didn't see that when you bought your original destiny disc, you're not catching on quick enough, and should probably just find a new game.

  • If you don't think it's worth the money, don't buy it. It's that simple. Acting as if it's owed to you just makes you an entitled brat.

  • That isn't an argument. You basically just described capitalism and expected that to somehow prove a game is a service. It isn't, and won't ever be. Sorry. Try Steam. That's a gaming service. Like Netflix.

  • Yes they are and you agreed to it being a service in the terms you agreed to when you started playing. Sorry, but you lost this one.
