Through the Fire: Bungie's Apology for year one and acknowledgement of how YOU shaped this game.

Greetings fellow Guardians, I don't have a lot of time to post (between shifts at work), but I did get a chance to log in and look around the game world and check out some of the things that I've been reading on here throughout the day and I also came across the above video in my google newsstand feed. DeeJ said in the video he likes bullet points (guess we never cracked that code if that what it takes to get communication out of him...), so here you go DeeJ The good • Going around to the various vendors, I really like the design of a lot of the weapons • From everything I’ve read, you all killed the new missions (hearing particularly about a stealth mission that takes place in the Crota Raid area like you had us go into the VoG for the HoW mission. I thought it was cool to let players in there who never had been for whatever reason. • All the updated UI improvements, storage, quest structure and tracking and expanded bounties are all welcome improvements • The Cryptard sell Legendaries (we don’t have to kill him this Christmas, yay) • With the addition of Cozmo the level of communication by Bungie on these forums has gone up 500% over the last two months. We still don’t always get the answers we want, but at least we know we are being heard. • Seeing the actual TTK stuff I’ve seen today makes me want to play it, where going into this morning I wasn’t really jazzed up for its release. • The video above is something that needed to be put out and it actually comes across as sincere by mostly everyone in it. The bad • Your continued approach to people that do not purchase DLC. I read the posts going up and logged in and sure enough you’ve capped Strike playlists at level 20. I mean seriously, you couldn’t allow level 34 players to play level 34 content? I just don’t understand that at all. I’m not going to suggest that people who don’t purchase an expansion should get that content, but what you are doing with restrictions and lowering of game modes that were previously available really amounts to extortion in my opinion. I read a post that called Destiny minus TTK the most expensive demo in the world and I have a hard time arguing that. In games like WoW you can play to level 20 for free and then all other content is restricted. The key word there is FREE. Players you’re locking at 20 have paid upwards of $140 many in under a calendar year. I didn’t like it when you removed rewards from Tiger strikes when TDB dropped and I don’t like this now. • PvP. This I have a mixed opinion on. On the one hand, I REALLY like that the regular playlists are TTK inclusive because I thought it was stupid as hell that in previous expansions, we paid for maps and never saw them unless we queued for TDB playlists that weren’t always available. Along with barely playing any HoW endgame because of your continued refusal to budge on matchmaking (and oh-by-the-way Urk, you said in the video that you need to communicate better when we ask for things how the process works on your end and whether or not it can be done. This has been ignored WAY TOO LONG), I played exactly 2 PVP matches on HoW maps because of the system you had in place. On the other hand, I kinda get why you’d combine game modes (Control/Clash, etc), but it still comes across as yet another slap in the face to those who are waiting or aren’t buying TTK. • I also heard that we can’t run anything bu base level missions. So if it’s level 4 in the Cosmodrome, we can only run it as level 4 and not up the difficulty. Again, just seems petty. If you want players to buy future expansions, a better way to make them want to play isn’t to piss them off and take everything away from them. If your new content is all you believe it is, people will buy it. The content needs to be able to sell itself. After logging in, looking around the tower, scoping the Director and going down to Mars for a couple minutes, I shut off my console because I saw all I needed to see. Destiny is pointless without TTK and I think that is a huge mistake. People on the fence are still potential customers and completely putting them off is just bad business. • Lastly because I’m going to be late if I don’t’ wrap this up. As much as I appreciated the above video and thoughts of those in it, I don’t like that I randomly found it on google. This is something that YOU should have posted directly to your fans and not gone through Gameinformer to disseminate. It just reeks of one more tie-in grab to get us to an advertisers site and it comes off as a bit less sincere to not state it directly. Of all the avenues you take to disseminate information, it still seems like your own forums are the least important to you and that Reddit, Gameinformer, etc take precedence to your own site. That’s it. Hope the bullet points helped and I sincerely hope that maintaining a relationship with non-dlc fans becomes more of a priority for you all in the future, because I see a lot of good and I'm just waiting for the moment you take those steps forward without taking one back. Here's to year two and all it hopefully will be. Thank you, Sols
Of all the avenues you take to disseminate information, it still seems like your own forums are the least important to you and that Reddit, Gameinformer, etc take precedence to your own site.
We love giving you direct info but sometimes we also like to let journalists like GI and Edge come in to play the game, ask questions, and then write their own stories to pass on to you. We figure that info coming from us will be seen as biased so we like to have a third party give you a view of the game from fresh eyes. As for other platforms like Reddit - it's known that I came from that team, but I have been posting here far more than over there since I was hired. I try to reach the community everywhere possible on the Internets. Glad that you have found some things you like with the beginning of Year Two, and we will continue to work on the things you have opinions on how to improve.

        • If Bungie want me to spend an extra £40 on a game I will. I'll go pre-order my copy of Star Wars Battlefront now. £40 well spent i believe.

          • They are penalizing players who do not purchase their DLC/ Year 2 content. I'm not sure if this plan is effective for profit, but it definitely angers those who are/feel restricted from content they purchased.

            • Bungie are liars. Making a game fit for 'casual' gamers. There's nothing casual about grinding 10+ hours a week then putting a huge money wall that says " If you don't pay up we don't need you. We'll get paid handsomely from our 'dedicated' followers." You really ruined the MMO Type gaming for console Bungie. Well -blam!-ing done

            • I've been a destiny player since day one bungie! DAY ONE!!!!! I have paid and played both dlc's before taken king- yet I feel punished for doing so, by the time I get what is being sold as a collectors edition for $80 I will have paid $160.00, why am I, a supporter of destiny since the beta, getting the short end of the stick? should I wait for destiny year 3 so I wont be doing this again?? If not for players like me and anyone who supported this game through its many faults it would not be the success it is today. Thank you to whoever decided it was ok to rip off all your first supporters!!!!!! Destiny is and I'm sure will be an amazing game with more potential then most on the market but thanks to my wallet getting smaller with every new turn I'm not sure if I want to be a part of what it will grow into, and that sucks!!!!!!!

            • Let me start off by saying that so far, The Taken King is exceptional. I have very few complaints about it. Locking players out of content is wrong. They shouldn't do it, calling Destiny an expensive demo without TTK is humorously accurate. But it would be increasingly complicated to allow people who didn't buy the DLC to still do Dailes, Nightfalls etc. without getting content they didn't pay for. This increasingly complicated situation would get increasingly more complicated going forward. For example, what would be the purpose of letting players get to level 40 if they don't do any content that doesn't require them to be level 40? If they had a separate playlist for non DLC buyers, this would be fine for the first DLC. But what about the next one? Or the next ones? I'm all for equality between DLC buyers and non DLC buyers, but we're reiterating a problem and no possible solutions. We can't be angry at Bungie for not coming up with a solution if we can't come up with one ourselves.

The better business Bureau rating is one of the most prestigious ratings a company can receive. If you complain enough and do not get it resolved by Activision, their grade goes down. Companies would not allow that to happen so they usually reach a plea deal with all complaints. Please, use this resource if you're serious about getting a refund.

I'm very disappointed in destiny, to be honest I used to follow Bungie like a lap dog... So to speak because marathon was amazing and halo had such an amazing story that to put it plainly sucked you right into the action. So I growing up on Bungie and many other games expected one of my favorite game makers to not fail me. I've also always had good customer support, their was dedicated servers in halo and those who cheated were not tolerated and were dealt with and removed by the force of the ban hammer. Now me as a beta tester of destiny and a supporter since they announced they were making a new game and moving on away from Microsoft and of course I was angered they were moving into Sony territory but I didn't mind so much I was happy to share the company that pretty much raised my child hood gaming years. Now I feel like the alley cat behind Bungies office building that they throw their empty cans at, and no I don't feel I'm entitled to TTK free but I do feel I'm entitled to what I already payed for. I'm sorry Bungie I don't have the money at the time I've personally hit a bump in the road but because of that I can't come home from work and play a game that even with all the negatives is still one of my favorite games on my Xbox one. None the less thanks again sols for a good read and information always happy to read a post of yours
forgive the punctuation and any spelling errors typing while watching kids is a bit of a hassle.
I can't say that this video felt like an apology so much as a thinly-veiled promotional video for The Taken King. IF TTK Was Truly an Apology for Y1: • It wouldn't be $40, especially for those who had preordered Destiny and the Season Pass. • It wouldn't totally eviscerate the base game for those who didn't purchase it. An apology that you have to pay for isn't an apology. Why would anyone feel vindicated for spending an additional $40 on top of $100 just go get fixes to things that should never have been delivered in such a broken state? So they finally get around to having some "rich, cinematic storytelling" in TTK? What about the storyline in the base game? I could have sworn that that was a feature that was etched onto the box. I never saw fine print that stated: "Rich cinematic storytelling to be delivered through multiple paid DLCs." This is no apology. Its just further proof that they expect us to pay them to develop things that should have been present at launch.

                      • My decision whether to get TTK was weighed by the fact my Plus needs updating soon also, which I only got for Destiny. I am one of those "on the fence customers" and I wont be getting the new DLC. Bungie matches every good thing with something completely shitty. So long and thanks for the fish.

                      • So i did buy it. I also bought the Collectors upgrade for the Emotes and other stuff because well, i wanted it. But overall i had FUN. So far i have one character all the way trough the story and another about 90% through, (both level 40) and my third is level 39 1/2. I have the Nightstalker and Sunbreaker subclasses unlocked, and let me tell you, in my opinion, best subclasses so far. Sunbreaker gives me pure destructive awesomeness. It felt a lot like a combo between Striker and Golden gun, bt way more fun that both. Nightstalker was just pure fun, i had more fun with my nightstalker than the other Hunter subclasses, the bow is a lot of fun. I simply cannot wait until i get the stormcaller. If im right it will be a lot of fun too. The story seemed a little short, but there are still lots of side quests left to do, but the biggest thing was the addition of RICH CINEMATIC STORY. There was interaction, there was jokes, there was MORE. Bounties are less linear and more fun. The gun testing is also a lot of fun. While bungie still got some things wrong, and there are still things we need and a re waiting for. I am overall mostly pleased with TTK. Also the guns.....they FEEL more powerful than they used to, legendaries aside from a spare few felt average at best, new greens and blues feel strong and destructive. So take away what you will from it, but for the most part i am satisfied after day 1 with my purchase, will i still be after i rip through the quests? maybe, will i still be satisfied with it after a month? maybe. Will i regret getting it just for the subclasses? NEVER. Shadow Out.

And if you ask if there is anything they can do they get snotty and say they can't deal with it as bungie is a billion dollar company ( wonder how much Microsoft and Sony are worth? Hmm )

I agree with you. I honestly love TTK so far, but locking those who didn't buy the expansion out of the endgame they already paid for was a horrible move.

                            • Locking players out of content that they previously paid for is WRONG. Other than that and the misleading suros armory pre order...I like a lot of what they are doing. Two steps forward and one step back. I believe this game has its prime days coming. As with all online games, it requires trial and error. It's impossible to please everyone. As long as they listen and consider our wishes, most importantly from veteran players, things will be good.

                                    • I haven't played Destiny for over two months, so I thought I would give 2.0 a spin. I wasn't exactly too impressed. All the positives I found were. 1) The mechanics of PVP were slightly more fluid, the Aim bot wasn't as finicky. 2) The PVP maps were larger and felt more like traditional Halo maps...Not wanna be "Nuke Towns" 3) Graphics seem slightly cleaned up. But they still aren't actually good compared to PC games. 4) Auto's were at least use able, but still not where they should be. Some negatives. 1) Shot guns = Junk, yet still OP in PVP like everyone said. 2) Fusion rifles = Still junk. 3) Legendary stuff unbalanced. 4) LFG everything = F You. 5) I err broke into the mine to have a look see..Shinny but uninspiring. I don't know... Destiny doesn't even look beautiful anymore. It's starting to look long in the tooth to me. The funny thing is people keep trying to refer to it as being like "CoD" but it's not. With CoD after a new year, you get a completely new game. Sure your doing the same game play...duh, that's what you bought the game for. But it is a new story, new set of graphics etc, you got a 100% new game. Not a tiny little Add on pretending it's a new game, and charging you like it's a new game. At least with HoW, it took people a couple of weeks to realize they got screwed over. Not the 5 hours it did with TTK.
