You can't do nightfall until you beat the raid I think. It's locked until you beat Oryx.
Worse part is this is also true for Shaxx's new crucible bounties that are supposed to be the pvp players version of the nightfall, but players who only do pvp can't get them until they beat oryx...wuuut?

I may be wrong but I don't think you actually have to complete the raid. When they say "beat oryx" I think they mean just complete the new story missions. Like you had to do to unlock the PoE in house of wolves

It doesn't say 'beat oryx'. It says survive his wrath, which could mean anything really.

I doubt the nightfall will be locked behind the raid just story missions I reckon
