The new one isn't superior IMO. Dinklage wasn't all that bad. I was at least used to him. I'm not sure what a tiny automaton born from a large sphere with space magic should sound like, but Dinklage never bothered me. I don't think the ghost should be so chipper, its a mechanical/mysterious being. Something about Dinklage's tone seemed to fit that for me. The script doesn't give any actor much to work with.
