There have been a good few theories on who the Exo Stranger is and what her ultimate goal is. Here's my theory.
First, let's start off with the Deep Stone Crypt, the infamous subroutine that seeded the first Exo consciousness. The Deep Stone Crypt mark, along with the description of the Crypt and its surroundings, resembles the Citadel quite well. This leads me to Maya Sundaresh.
Maya was part of an Ishtar research team who studied the Vex. She and her team became stuck in a Vex simulation, enlisting the help of a Warmind to get out. They managed to save 227 identical copies of themselves from Vex hell. With the help of biomechanical proxy bodies, a the Warmind, and a neural firewall, they approach the Citadel, ready to release their copies into the Vex networks and see what is on the other side. Maya Sundaresh, who is oddly quiet, says some odd things.
"What could you do with it?" she murmurs, staring up. "If you understood it?"

"Maybe you could bring something back to now. Something you needed."

"Or go forward and learn something vital. If you knew how to control it, how to navigate across space and time."
The team then release the copies into the vast networks, hoping that they will come back with knowledge. I believe Maya ponders on this, and at a later date (possibly the Collapse), she returns to the Citadel in her proxy body and enters. She sees the Collapse, the rise of the City, the Great Disaster and Twilight Gap and the Reef Wars. She witnesses what will happen to humanity unless she steps in.
So she travels the dimensions, looking for the right universe where the right Ghost raises the right Guardians who finds just the right jumpship to get to the City.

I always stand here, resolute. Then fall back to that point, there, where everything shatters...
There are always the dead. Their names shift.
Sometimes I think I see myself among the dead.
But I am resolute.
She watches you as you fight the Fallen, the Hive, the Vex, and the Cabal. She knows what is to come, and she now knows that you are the right Guardian to save humanity. It is possible that she is still tethered to that Venusian Warmind back in the Ishtar Academy, or perhaps she carries him/her with her. I think she is talking to the future version of your Guardian on the Stranger's Call mission, which would explain the Ghost-like transmat. Of course, this may be simply the ramblings of a madman
TL;DR: Maya Sundaresh is the Exo Stranger

(Just wanna say I've had this theory for I don't even know how long.) Obviously...

I had a hunch that she was related to those simulations. Thanks for taking the time to point out the quotes to back it up. You look cute today

I know the strangers identity...Maggie Greene!
-
She is a character that by design can teleport and time travel because she circumvented a reality where the vex controls all or did something catastrophic to the time space continuum by utilizing the black heart. In other words she is an anomaly In the best sense of the word. So as a character, it can plausible she died before our guardian could meet her, or we've yet to meet her
most likely
Is the stranger the woman that Banshee struggles to remember?

This girl I new ........ Cayde-6

Highly doubt it. Going off the Last Vex card, Maya talks about a machine and puts them into 'Records', written just like the flavor text from FWC, and even mentions to 'keep this little cult of ours quiet'. It appears she is the one who founded the Future War Cult and may still be leading it
-
The device they create is also the beginnings of FWC

Why does everyone have spooky in their name today?

Edited by SnowBodhi: 10/2/2015 9:31:48 AMI've suspected for a long time that the Stranger is Maya Sundaresh, but what I hadn't considered is that 227 copies put into bimechanical bodies are the first Exos. I assume that's where you were going with this? If not, that's where I'm now going. A combination of Warmind and Vex technology combined with the light of the Traveller would surely be enough to create something as supposedly complex as an Exo. I've always wondered about the Dr Shim reference. It would then make sense for any Exo entering The Archive but not for humans and Awoken. Maybe there's a little bit of Shim in all of us ;)

Who is Rasputin actually. Is Eris bad??? And is the exo stranger the spirit of the traveller?
-
I agree with most things here but I don't think she's working with our future selves & I don't think the group were actually stuck in a simulation, they just thought they were. They looked to a Warmind for help to see if they were. Her teleportation looks more like Vex tech than Ghost. She's no doubt from the future or some other timeline. I would say more but time is limited & all. Ironic huh?

Nope, Maya is human. If you have the collectors edition, one of the pages had her ID on it...though cayde-6 really liked her
-
Good idea. I think it's a credible theory
-
Lara Croft. Case closed. Next topic please.
-
or Mara Sov is the stranger Cayde was turned into an exo so why cant mara sov be turned into the stranger? you ever see the queen/stranger in the same place at the same time? no because of paracausal temporal disruptions
-
Dr shim is stranger
-
So cayde and maya are connected? 2 of the coolest and mysterious characters are connected, this is awesome
-
I read a theory that Rasputin put our solar system into a causal time loop, and when the right combination of events leads to defeating the darkness he would stop the loop. Maybe the story is that we are all in Rasputins simulation until we get the right combination of events and then when we defeat the darkness he'll let the real world know what paths to take for the real victory.

I know who she is..
maggie from the walking dead
I have a strong feeling shes linked to the nine. Theres also still the question how skolas escaped the nine seen as the queen gave him to them
-
Thought we would see her in the game again at some point Still no word of no time to explain Only disappointment of ttk so far
