The Hive, and maybe the Vex, are already minions of the Darkness. Does Oryx just give them a more concentrated dose of Darkness to corrupt them ... even more? Is Oryx's army of Darkness different from the Armies of Darkness we've already been fighting?
Edit: I'm not explaining my question well. From what I understand, Oryx is using the power of the Darkness to twist his minions who are already under the influence of the Darkness. Does he just give them Darkness Extra? Or are the regular enemies only drinking Darkness Zero? I just don't get how he's changing minions of darkness to.. minions of MORE darkness.
Edit 2: I was talking it out with Schruef below, and so far this is my theory:
...Still just hard to understand how minions of the darkness would need to be brainwashed to be minions of the darkness x 2.
We already know the Hive have that other dimension where Crota was, so that lines up with what you say about Oryx using another dimension to twist his subordinates.
Maybe the Taken are like Darkness Special Forces. I'll put it like this: the Taken are to the Hive as the Marines are to the Navy. A part of the same force, but trained to use different tactics and abilities. This might not line up with the vidoc saying the Taken army members are twisted and brainwashed to be in Oryx's army, because you'd think the truly elite would volunteer to be in his special force (and not need to be brainwashed). With that, volunteering might not be enough to be twisted by that level of pure Darkness. Their actual conscious must be broken in some way to be a true, devout lemming of the Darkness.
It'd be the difference between a Guardian wielding the Traveler's Light, and the Traveler's Light wielding a Guardian. To be overcome with the Traveler's level of power, a Guardian would certainly lose all control of himself and simply do the bidding of the Light. How cool would it be to see the Speaker's "Taken" army? You think Guardians are powerful now?
And
I wanted to add that my previous ramblings relate to current minions of the Darkness. I think that includes the Hive and at least the faction of Vex that were worshiping the Dark Heart in the Black Garden.
Any other enemy would definitely need to be forcefully converted. The Cabal and Fallen would definitely need to have their minds broken to get rid of their free will.
This is all just my speculation, of course. I think it all starts to make sense in a logical way, but I'd love to hear other ideas.
I was wondering why Crota wasn't in his father's Taken army, and So Says Sage brought up the point that Crota has a similar flame affect about him that matches the Taken. My thoughts on that:
... I like what you're saying. How do I know Crota wasn't Taken? Yeah, he didn't have the jittery-ness, but we saw him in the Hive dimension. Maybe they can control that level of Darkness better there, but in our dimension they start to almost "rip apart at the seams," as it were. Almost like they shouldn't even exist in that form in our plane of existence... held together only by the power of Darkness and the will of Oryx.
We've heard tell (in the Grimoire) of Crota being like a shadow on the battlefield when we fought him on the moon (in our dimension). Untouchable, even. This is actually starting to make more and more sense!
In my mind I don't really view the Darkness as a tangible thing. It's more like the state of collapse thay these other races have taken advantage of. The Vex have got their whole 'taking control of all Time' agenda, the Cabal are just a military race and the Fallen are tribal scavengers. The Hive, I think, are the most closely associated with the Darkness. Perhaps they were created by it or maybe it's just a force their gods were able to harness.
