There's so much we don't know about precisely how the human mind works, much like depression (which I actually have) there could be a million and one different causes for it; like for example the brain producing too much of one substance, too little of another, and in the end you get mixed signals telling you that you're really a girl who looks like a man or you like the same gender. The brain controls everything and if the "wires get crossed" so to say, it could throw the balance off and send out the wrong messages to the body.
What people today are trying to do are molding themselves with the error rather than correcting it right at the source. Taking supplements, hormones and having expensive not to mention painful and occasionally dangerous surgeries as a workaround to make them feel right again. Granted I guess medical science isn't that advanced that we can detect issues like that in the brain early in development or even in the womb or else things like depression would be cured or at least made far more manageable. One day though...
Though as for being taken seriously, they are still human beings and entitled to the same treatment and basic rights.
