Hmm... Interesting question. I believe they are their own little lights, but all Light is connected. If they Traveler were to die, so would the Ghosts

The HotBG is not Vex at all, but was worshiped by it. The Traveler may be the creator of the Vex, and she used them to help with terraforming before their corruption by the Heart

The black heart isn't vex it is something else. And the most logical reaction for the vex was to worship the heart
