How do we know the speaker is what he says he is? Did he just rock up to the tower and assume no-one would ask questions?

  • The Speaker that you know is not the first one. It is a role given to a person. They bare the mask, speak for the Traveler and help the Traveler. The current Speaker was either Osiris's apprentice or master. The Speaker disapproves of Osiris because he inspires guardians to understand the darkness rather than fight it. Osiris disapproves of the Speaker because he does nothing and helps no one.

  • It could be that when or if the speaker dies his ghost finds another body with such a great connection to the traveler that allows him to be speaker. But since the speaker always stays in the last city and so close to the traveler at that and with such a good connection of light he probably won't die for ages

  • Ghosts seem to only have one guardian- if they didn't, then the greats could easily just be revived by multiple ghosts. I'm more interested in what the actual connection is between the Traveler/Ghosts and the Speaker. Egypt's rulers claimed to be able to speak with the gods and act according to their will, but no real link existed (which is because it is considered mythology and no longer religion). Maybe the Speaker has no link and that is why Osiris parted ways with him.

  • "They bare the mask" I still don't understand, so some random person was just chilling and a mask magically appeared on his face and he now speaks for the traveler? Is there any proof that the speaker (past and present) is with the traveler? Did we see them descend from the traveler, did it shine a light on him saying he's the real deal or something. Because if not thats retarded, people would want proof you represent the speaker and not just blindly accept it.
There has always been a Speaker, an anonymous high priest with a mysterious and powerful connection to the Traveler and its Ghosts. In all the centuries of the City's history, the Speaker's great work has never changed - to guide new Guardians, heal the Traveler, and raise our crippled protector from its slumber.
You bring up a really good point, though. I don't know how they would go about choosing one. Joe Staten, the guy who created most of the lore ideas, probably created the Speaker's role like the Egyptian Pharaohs. The Speaker gets there by an unprovable link (like how Pharaohs were "descendents of gods." Mostly the gods Osiris and Ra), then can do anything in name of their god. I think our current Speaker is incompetent, but then again I side with Osiris and his time traveling Darkness game of chess with the Nine and Awoken.

  • When it comes to Destiny's lore, we are all just fumbling around the darkness looking for light. Keep asking questions and trying to find answers, maybe we'll figure this stuff out.

  • Osiris was the Speaker's apprentice

  • We dont actually know that. The two sources are from the "Osiris" grimoire and one of the flavour texts from the Trials gear. Neither one specifies. Be careful of spreading unconfirmed things (usually more important than this)

  • It's pretty obvious from the way he talks that the Osiris card is from the POV of the Speaker

  • The Speaker did not leave on good terms with Osiris. While it could be him, the style of writing seems to be a third party. It still doesn't tell who was apprentice

  • The Speaker didn't agree with Osiris and banished him, but he may now want him back, seeing as Osiris's "prophecies" on Crota and the Hive gods are starting to come true.

I understand that the majority of the story and in game lore still needs to be fleshed out but what are all these people doing? The speaker, osiris, the awoken the guardians (before you were resurrected) Is everyone just sitting on they're arse waiting for the darkness and the bad guys? Is anyone doing anything?!?!

  • People are doing lots of shit, it's just your Guardian (for whatever reason) is involved in even more shit. You're the one who chose to listen to Eris when no one else did. You're the one who agreed to hunt the Wolves.
