“Ok,” I chimed sarcastically, “maybe that didn’t help as much as I thought it would.” Both of us turned and sprinted towards the giant stone doors that were slowly sliding shut. I ducked and rolled, ignoring the pain of my rib, to avoid bolts of energy and falling rocks alike. I had never experienced something so terrifying as the angry squeals of hundreds of Vex mere feet behind me. We reached the doors moments before they closed, and Sierra dove through the closing gap. Just behind her I slid through the space that was only barely wide enough for me now. I escaped the closing doors just as they sealed shut, with a crunching noise from the Vex caught inside. We weren’t out of the woods yet though, four taken minotaurs stood before us. I dove to the right and Sierra to the left. Once again I drew my fusion rifle and fired into the group of goblins that stood behind their larger cousins. The bolts of void light cut a path which we both sprinted through. The room was full of rectangular blocks of stone and metal in all different sizes. I vaulted over one and leapt onto the next, before dropping into cover behind a third. I popped up with my rifle, taking out a few of the Vex and distracting them from Sierra who slid into cover next to me. “Keep moving back,” I told her, “I’ll cover, then we’ll switch. Sync?” “Sync.” She responded quickly. I popped up again, breaking a minotaur’s shield and tossing a grenade top finish it. I kept firing bursts into the crowd of Vex as Sierra dove, rolled and slid from cover to cover. “Mark in three, two, one…” she said over the comm, “Now.” I turned to see her long rifle peeking over a block of stone. I jumped onto the block behind me and dropped off in a roll, Sierra’s sniper rounds flying past me. I jumped over the next box and slid behind another, hobgoblin shots scorching the ground behind me, I vaulted over the one behind me and sprinted into cover beside Sierra. Looking at the next section of the room, it was a death trap. It was a long, narrow straight corridor with no cover. We couldn’t run or we’d be killed, we couldn’t hold off all these Vex either. Sierra looked at me and said, “We’re trapped… we can’t take all of them.” She was right. “Well we’re sure as hell gonna try.” I said, summoning all the courage I had, and unloaded my Thunderlord into the swarm of Taken Vex. Sierra tossed a snare grenade at one of the minotaurs and began picking off hobgoblins with her sniper. I tossed a deluge grenade at the Vex to hold them back, but they kept coming. Three, then four, then five Vex collapsed into flaming ash a bolts of solar light flew down from the ceiling of the cavern. A titan in bronze armor dropped from high above us, on top of the nearest group of Vex. Ren unloaded his auto shotgun into the minotaur, sending it to the ground, and he threw his fist into a goblin. Ren ran over to the cover we were shooting from and drew his own weapon, that modified solar fusion rifle. “Go!” he said, not even bothering to bring his head up from the scope. “Go! Keep moving and don’t look back.” I tried to say something but he cut me off, “You saw what happened, I didn’t. That was the mission. Now go.” The room was beginning to fill with Taken Vex, as more and more poured in from other doorways. Ren stood and stepped out from cover, braving the fire, and threw down a Ward of Dawn. The glowing void sphere blocking everything that hit it. He reloaded his fusion rifle and said, “Give me your best damn shot you filthy mechanical sons of darkness!” We ran, down the corridor as fast as we could, the sounds of fighting at our backs. As we reached the safety of the tunnels at the end of the long straight, I could hear a gut-wrenching, tortured, and unmistakeable scream. Don’t look back.
